Naval ascension missions - why are they so random?

This would go against the games dynamics of "just content" with no "back content" :) I would love the idea though. Sadly, I have almost reached top ranks to I would miss out on this great idea :(

A bit of story would fit with the original Elite. The original naval mission had a very small story behind it. I think some story would be fine as long as it wasn't player-centric; so no becoming Emperor/assassinating the President/becoming Hero of the universe, etc.

I would love that as well. But I am almost at the top ranks so quite a few would loose out on this. Something like the old X-Wing would be nice. But first fix the core.

In a reflection of the real military, call it needs of the service, mixed with the fact that common sense was secured a long time ago. Sometimes technical expertise and excellent physical fitness gets you promoted, sometimes it's holding the right flag officer's umbrella during a change of command ceremony in August. And sometimes, people are promoted because they're just really good at paperwork and shining their shoes. True story.

We also had cases of officers "falling up the stairs" (don't know if that expression makes any sense in english). They were so utterly incompetent, they got promoted into a position where they couldn't do much harm ("old" officers are quiet well protected by our law here, so you can't fire them easily).

@Topic
I only had delivery missions and one "bring us combat stimulants"-mission. Thought they would have changed that with 1.3. but it seems it is still a place holder :/
