Naval progression questions and help outfitting my Cobra

So I have mainly done trading and exploration, but decided to try the Naval progression aspect with the Federation.

I have done the missions to find things and bring back, but now I am being asked to kill an NPC. How hard are these missions? I am not the greatest at combat, only have a week in my Cobra (Type 9 Commander here).

Also, I am in LHS 1914, does anyone know a location that I can go to get some decent upgrades?

Cheers!

The mission is fairly easy, you have to bring down a Federal dropship. Practise at a nav point or somewhere if you are unsure as to your abilities.

Founders World - if you have the permit. Otherwise you can find just about everything at either XI Ursae Majoris ot Saktsak.

You'll be encountering two types of shooting-based missions.

First type is an assassination - while potentially risky, it's not all that time-consuming. the Fed variety of those places a general whatshisface in a uss in a system of the mission's chosing, he'll be flying a dropship, which might be challenging to crack due to lots of health and turreted weapons. A cobra can deal with it, but I wouldn't really bother with anything smaller.

The second type is a clone of the normal uss hunts for a specific type of ships, usually pirates. The number of kills you need will vary from 3 to 6, which is where the time-consuming part kicks in. It might be many uss misses before you find pirates - the way you recognize them is that they'll be trying to loot you. Generally though, they are weak opponents. I've only met those flying cobras while ranking up.

My current load out is 2 main beam lasers and secondary are cannons? I could fit rail guns on the smaller hardpoint?

Nah, that loadout is more than sufficient. The General isn't that hard to take out. Lasers on shields, and both on the hull. Watch your energy management and when he has shots at you, keep your pips in SYS high (4 preferably as long as you have shields up). Focus on his Power Plant to make the kill easier.

I've done many missions in my Cobra with no issues.

And a FYI, here's the ranks so far for me...
Federal: Recruit > Cadet > Midshipman > Petty Officer > Chief Petty Officer > Warrant Officer
Imperial: Outsider > Serf > Master > Squire > Knight

Good luck, Commander!

PS- Re: decent upgrades. Look into systems that are High Tech or Industrial. You don't have to travel anywhere specific.
