Navigating via HUD

Sorry if this has already been raised, but are they planning to enable an jumping interface simply by looking out the window? You used to be able to do this in other Elites, no? (Or am I going mad?). I'd love to be able to point my ship in the direction of something that looks interesting and head in that direction, rather than trying to find what you're looking for in the map...

I'd love that - however a lot of the stuff you see in the skybox is a long way off so may not be possible for everything. However it would be nice to be able to select a system in the direction of what you want, or to transition to the galaxy map with a view matching the cockpit view.

I have very much been wanting this. Soooo much. I would much rather follow my heart than my mind when it comes to exploration in this game.

(edit: Rewrote wording of suggestion) Development shouldn't be hard considering there is an existing UI element, positional data and already implimented on screen display in the appropriate position for the jump. At this point it's literally just the issue of updating the code to show those the same way that USS are handled in space, just at all times within the system.

This would let you look around and select systems by putting your pilots point of focus towards the star. Or the front of your ship if you don't use head tracking.

This would also drastically improve the feel of super cruise. Giving someone the ability to navigate manually by recognition of star patterns and good old fashioned local know-how which would reduce a large amount of tedium in the game currently. It would enhance the UX drastically. What we have is already through and through awesome, but the gameplay that would be added would be awesome.

This is a good idea, alright. I'm not sure the game architecture would support it, though. It is clumsy to have to bring up a separate sort-of nested interface to navigate, and it looks kind of like the navigation subsystem operates independently of the rest of the HUD. Or maybe I am just imagining all that. To make in-HUD navigation workable, the galaxy map would have to be on the same "page" as the HUD.

Good point, Twelvefield. Hopefully it's not so difficult, but there may be an odd separation of systems there.
