Navigation Beacons

How do they, um...how do they work?

What do they do?

All I can work out so far is that they disappear from one spot then reappear in another about 500m away. I've spent a while just following a trail of them a couple of times. The last time I followed the trail I looked away for a few minutes and ended up crashing into one and getting my Cobra blown up. I wasn't a happy bunny.

Funny you should mention these, I followed the beacon from the LP 98-132 unknown signal source today. When the beacon drops off your scope to the rear (about 5 km apart, but I had my scope range full out) a new one pops up just in front of you. I was sad enough to follow them, and they seem to be a continuous string (loop?) for at least 500 km with nothing at the end. Roughly 40 minutes of boredom :(

They disappear and reappear because they are following an orbital path. Some of the unidentified signals go awol because their orbit is fast enough for you to leave its instance, despawning any NPCs.

The only time I've seen that is at one of the 'moving' unidentified sites which appears to be a couple of Federation Lakons that you, in effect, interdict when you exit supercruise. They hang about for a minute then jump back into supercruise. You can then see the Unidentified Signal target indicator fly off on it's original course at 20km/s (base super cruise speed).
