Who enjoys having to open the system map to select a body to navigate?
Yes, I know once you're in the system you can choose the body. But what if you're not in the system? What if you're about 15 ly away and you want to manually select the star you want to jump to, then drill down (opens into the same panel, but different view) into the system bodies? Who would want this?
On a similar, but different note (quite an oxymoron there), I hate having to go into the galaxy/system map. It just destroys the mystique that I'm flying through space in a space ship. Why can't we have an interface inside the cockpit for navigating through the galaxy/system map? Some have argued that it would put too much strain on the system to render both the outside, inside, and system/star map. That's a ridiculous notion for contemporary GPU's. Plus, why can't we still retain the galaxy/system map for those who want to interact that way, and for those who want to interact with the maps without leaving the cockpit, the new, better way.
"I'd rather not take resources from the devs in developing new content and bug fixes." Yeah, I've heard that one a lot, too. How's that working out for you? All this awesome content and the bug free game that we have now.
Yeah, that's a silly notion. There's nothing stopping the devs from doing both.
Anyway, the simplest implementation would allow us to drill down into the system bodies, through the navigation panel. And as for plotting courses, I can't see any restriction doing it from the navigation panel. Sure, you're limited to what you see (that's another problem; how the navigation panel filters out most stars), but if you want something more extensive then go into the actual system/navigation map.
I think it's a good idea. What do you think?
