Navigation panel drill down to system map

Who enjoys having to open the system map to select a body to navigate?

Yes, I know once you're in the system you can choose the body. But what if you're not in the system? What if you're about 15 ly away and you want to manually select the star you want to jump to, then drill down (opens into the same panel, but different view) into the system bodies? Who would want this?

On a similar, but different note (quite an oxymoron there), I hate having to go into the galaxy/system map. It just destroys the mystique that I'm flying through space in a space ship. Why can't we have an interface inside the cockpit for navigating through the galaxy/system map? Some have argued that it would put too much strain on the system to render both the outside, inside, and system/star map. That's a ridiculous notion for contemporary GPU's. Plus, why can't we still retain the galaxy/system map for those who want to interact that way, and for those who want to interact with the maps without leaving the cockpit, the new, better way.

"I'd rather not take resources from the devs in developing new content and bug fixes." Yeah, I've heard that one a lot, too. How's that working out for you? All this awesome content and the bug free game that we have now. :)

Yeah, that's a silly notion. There's nothing stopping the devs from doing both.

Anyway, the simplest implementation would allow us to drill down into the system bodies, through the navigation panel. And as for plotting courses, I can't see any restriction doing it from the navigation panel. Sure, you're limited to what you see (that's another problem; how the navigation panel filters out most stars), but if you want something more extensive then go into the actual system/navigation map.

I think it's a good idea. What do you think?

I'd vey much like to be able to target a star in game and fly to that.
As an explorer i would use this method for local exploration but the traditional method when heading for a particular area.
Any improvements to navigation are welcomed by me :D

It is a bit clunky, I agree. Back when moving around the ship was still very much on the table, and not the pie-in-the-sky wishlist feature it's become, I thought it might be nice if we had a navigation console that our characters physically moved to. But I appreciate that the levels of immersion acceptable during a long-haul exploration trip don't necessarily gel with those during a combat mission. In terms of the time taken to get to the console, balance would be difficult to say the least. They'd at least have to leave the instant-access buttons in as an option.

A more practical solution, and honestly something I thought FD were going to do until they removed the model, would have been to use the iPad that used to sit between the pilot's legs. A very short animation of the pilot pulling and/or rotating that display towards them until it filled the screen, then rendering the map, might have been enough to be convincing without needing complex overlays. But the iPad has gone, so I guess that was never part of the plan.

As for accessing the system map, I find I use the mouse a lot in that view so I've simply bound the open/close function onto my middle mouse button. For me, being able to get to it through the navigation panel wouldn't mean much since I'd still have to reach for the mouse. I appreciate that VR or console players might do things differently though, and an "open in System Map" option on the selection mini-menu wouldn't seem out of place.

There was talk of that back in the day, too. Manually targeting individual stars from the skybox might be awkward when they're only a few arcseconds apart. I would like to see an option to display all reachable stars on the HUD, although it might get a bit busy in the core.
