Newcomer / Intro Navigation Question

One thing that drives me crazy about navigating. I go to a point that is 1 jump away. I try to go back to the same place I just left that was 1 jump away. "No route". WHY? To me this makes no sense at all. Does anyone know why they did this?

Thanks,

If I'm not mistaken if you use "plot your route" function your trip will be shown on the galaxy map as a grey dashed line and you can trace it back until you re-plot your route again. It works for one jump the same way. When you select your destination on the map click on "plot your route" and you will be able to see where you came from after the jump. I'm just memorizing the jump distance and when ready to go back just scrolling through the nav tab on the left panel until I see system at that particular distance away. Would be nice to have "reverse route" function though.

Only things I can think of are:

1) You were really low on fuel when you plotted your first jump. As a result, you could jump a little further. Upon arrival in the new system you filled your tank past the amount you had when you jumped, thus negating the benefits of less mass. If you're in an area of the galaxy where there are few stars you may have to fly around a bit to burn up fuel so you can make that jump again.

2) You have a filter on the galaxy map that's blocking your jump. Though the filters don't apply to the destination system as far as I know, so this explanation shouldn't apply to you in this situation. But if you had a situation like above, but the filters are removing some stars between you and the destination you'd get the message you're seeing.

3) You having some sort of weird glitch.

OK jump range is dependent on your ships mass so loading cargo or even fuel can increase the mass too much for a jump.

Having insufficient fuel left for the return jump.

If the original system was in the Pilots Federation Starter Systems and you jumped out to the new system, if you docked there and had earned some rank you would lose access to the PFSS.

It sounds like a lack of fuel or too much mass for the jump though, the Sidewinder we start in is quite marginal on range.

If you want an exact answer for your case, I'd need the details:
  • which ship and which loadout
  • from where
  • to where
  • "plot route" or "select target"

and most important of all, what did you change on your ship if anything? Did you load up with cargo? Did you change a module?

Nope. I had full fuel in an Asp Explorer when I started and I was also empty cargo when I wanted to return.

Did you replot the route? You're not telling us enough. Many questions have been asked but you aren't answering any. Nobody can help you like that.

I suspect the star type filter. Have you filtered out certain types? If you have and your origin star is unchecked, you won't see it appear on the galmap.

I didn't replot the route. Don't know how to do that. I brought up the galaxy map and typed the name of the system I just came from and it highlighted, then both the mark and plot route were red.

That sounds like something that I get sometimes. What I've noticed when it happens is that although the map moves and the system I've just searched for is highlighted, the information is still for the system where I'm currently at. I need to explicitly click on the target system to select it and then the select and plot route buttons become available.

Just assumed it's a glitch with the galaxy map.

I must admit that I get that sometimes. I close the galaxy map and open it up again, which seems to sort it out. there seem to be all sorts of glitches in the game at the moment.

Go to oufitting and check what your jump range is, then compare that with the distance that the galaxy map says the jump is. Obviously, you can't jump if you don't have enough jump range, so you have to figure out why. Either your mass increased or you changed your FSD. You can improve your jump range by reducing your ship's mass or improving the FSD. If you have enough jump range, but still can't jump, it's either a glitch in the plotting or you lost permission to go back.

You need to be more specific. Where are you trying to jump from and to, and what ship and loadout do you have, then we can get straight to the bottom of your problem.9 times out of ten, there's a logical explanation. without specifics, all we can do is guess.
