Navigational map restricted to stars?

One of the things that has impressed me most in recent Elite clips is the 3D Navigational map. That and the spooky sounds, there and in Hyperspace... wonderful.... but I digress.

Does the map resolve down to planets? Or are planets selected from the list on the screen I've seen people using on the left side of the cockpit.

I remember in Frontier you could zoom right down to the point where you could target a space station with your autopilot (which could sometimes cause problems!). I just wondered how this was done in Elite Dangerous, and if there were any further developments planned.

In any case, it looks, and I'll use technical jargon here, bloody brilliant. :)

Looking forward to it :)

Be interested to see if how close they get to the mockups. Plenty of edge cases to deal with getting the computer to make a nice layout like that of every system I'm sure. Don't envy the person who's got that job. Well actually I do, sounds like a nice meaty problem to get into solving :)

A system wide map, showing planets, moons etc. will be added later.

I was wondering about this myself when using the map. Keeping track of trading routes with only five stars is quite simple but when the whole galaxy is opened up it would be more tricky without the full solar systems showing, at least for me.

My wife and daughters think I am really sad as I have a three monitor setup at home.

Left monitor - Excel spreadsheet with trading data which I have collected (routes, best prices, etc.)
Centre Monitor - Game
Right monitor - Elite forums

Life? Who needs one?

I actually did try the three monitor setup. Not sure if it was the way I had it setup, and do please correct me here, but on the left and right screens everything got stretched. Planets became ovals and it didn't look quite right.

I was going to have a play with the settings but haven't had chance yet. Too much time playing the game.

I was amazed at the scale of everything in a 3 monitor setup. Flying past the station was absolutely awesome. Made me want to get the Rift! Can't wait for the retail version.

When I have time I will have my laptop setup for my trading data, until FD put the full trading system in place, and setup my monitors correctly.

i noticed before the PB update that triple screen was really, REALLY wonky.. since then though all i had to do was bring down the FOV in the graphics settings to something between a fifth and a quarter on the slider and things started to look much much better.

I do have to run in windowed mode still so i can alt tab to my spreadsheet without a crash, but having a tablet on my "dash" (i sim race on my rig too) with my spreadsheet makes it easier :)
