I think the way naval ranking is done now is lame -- do a bunch of non-naval missions and then be given a single naval mission that gives you a rank upon completion. And what's worse, I can be a naval officer in both Fed and Empire.
I think we should have an honest to goodness naval career path -- missions that are just navy related. Gaining "rep" within that career path results in higher ranks. Further, the player should probably have to commit to one side or the other - Fed or Empire (does Alliance have ranks? If so, include them too of course). Furthermore, access to navy ships (e.g. Fed Corvette) should be locked behind the new navy career ranking system.
Doing this would open up so many new emergent game play and game mechanic opportunities.
I know the game will never change in this regard as there are already people with navy ranks. But I feel this has to be said.
