Navy ranking up

if i rank up with the Federal navy, do i become hostile in Empire, Alliance or independent systems? maybe a stupid question but i am a new player

No. They are completely independent of each other. o7

Not a stupid quetion, and you can rank up with all of them with no ill effects. Alliance doesn't have ranks btw, but you can get max ranks with both empire and feds without losing any rep or becoming hostile.

It makes more sense if you think of the major faction ranks as honorary of your services as opposed to literally joining a military.
