Newcomer / Intro Navy won't take stolen goods?

I got the starting Navy advancement mission on the bulletin board the other day requiring 3 tons of combat stabilizers. I thought - GREAT!! I just happen to have some that I scooped up after a battle on the way into port that are still in my cargo hold. i accepted the mission expecting to be able to deliver immediately, but it wouldn't let me turn them in. Can you not used 'stolen' goods to complete these missions?

i have to admit, I dont know for sure, but I will say that I dont believe you can use stolen goods for that. Same reason that you cannot sell them in the regular market place.
when you accept missions that require you to steal stuff it explicitly says so. if you are to procure combat stabilizers, chances are they are supposed to be legal :)

Yes, unless mission specifically tells you the cargo should be stolen (or could be stolen), it must be legally acquired.

The other thing that you need to pay attention to is, that naval advancement missions very often ask for the commodities that are illegal in said system. So you have to get them legally, but you still have to smuggle them through. If you're not good at stealth, always take advancement missions on outposts. It's much safer. ;)
