NCP = None Character Pratt

NCP chat

As much as I appreciate the work done by David Braben and the Elite team, I’m still astonished by how bad the communicational link is between us and the AI. If I was still playing the game on the BBC micro computer which back then only had 32k memory I’d understand why it was so bad! As it is the average computer nowadays has enough memory (let alone disk space) to easily store every encyclopedia printed on this planet, yet I cringe wherever I’m intercepted by an NPC during one of my many commodity runs. Why is this?

Below are just a few points which in my view seriously need revamping to make playing the game more playable

Why on earth do I receive direct messages from an NPC like this….”Contract details confirmed. I have the ship on my scanner”. Surely this is a communication which should be sent between the NCP and whoever offered the mission, not them and me!

Seems that regardless of how many times an NCP has interdicted me during a trip, the communication received from them doesn’t change and it’s always as if it’s a first encounter for them! Why this is the case I have no idea, but I know this clearly stops anyone being seriously emerged in the game when it comes to trading. I know if someone managed to evade an interdiction by submitting and then getting away without a shot being fired (which is what happens with me when interdicted) I’d be more than annoyed with my target and this would be expressed in any communication between us. As it is, it’s a repetition of the first which itself makes the whole process not only predictable but boring.

Am I the only one to be frustrated with this lack of AI interaction?
