Nearest Hostile Targeting Missiles - Why?

Title says is all. Why does my target nearest threat button ALWAYS OVERRIDE to missiles if there are any in the area? Particularly when these missiles AREN'T being fired at me? My PD take care of missiles, I never, ever, ever, ever have to target a missile for any reason ... EVER.

A similar note, Why do I waste PD Ammo shooting everyone else's missiles? Why can't my PD figure out which missiles are targeting me?

But back on topic ...

I can't tell you how many times I've been screaming (literally - in the heat of combat) at my ship trying to find the bastage on my six, and all I pull up with nearest hostile is a gd-dam missile.

I end up wasting valuable seconds cycling targets one by one ...

Any help?

As for your point-defense shooting all the missiles, it's pretty much because they haven't implemented any sort of complex RWR. The missiles lack a pointer to transmit their target which your Point-defense in turn doesn't check for allied or hostile. Could easily be fixed with little effort though I suppose they just haven't come around to doing so.

In any case I'd post it in the suggestion thread or even file a bug-report.

As for targeting missiles, I'm a little divided. Granted if you have PD, missiles immediately become a no-threat as they are dealt with up to a certain measure, on the other hand for the few that don't have PD, it's essential and potentially life-saving to be able to target them.

This ^. A thorn in my side for so long I don't even feel it anymore since I've abandoned the "target highest threat" option a long time ago. I just chalk it up to ED being ED and roll with it. However I hope it gets addressed Soon™

Indeed, my wingmate uses an ASP as a missile boat and my PD is shooting some of his missiles before they hit the enemy ship. no idea why.

We did some research, it seems not possible to shoot missiles by yourself, so the targeting function for these is useless. BUT you can target and destroy torpedoes with missiles! Get a lock on the torp with a missile and 90% of the time the torp gets destroyed. looks cool and even has a reason to exist.

I can't remember where, but it targets them because that's the threat priority order for targetting by nearest threat.

I think the priority order goes:
- Missiles (thing full of explosives imminently going to hit you)
- Hostile pilots who are actively attacking you (flashing red icon)
- Hostile pilots who aren't attacking you (red)
- Neutral pilots (orange)
- Allies (green)

I don't know where Wingmates (blue) and ships attacking Wingmates (purple) fit in, since I saw that list pre-wings.

EDIT: the targetting of missiles first also bugs me, fwiw

I haven't tried recently, but I have shot down missiles with beams and with multicannons.
