Nearly lost everything...

So I just finished upgrading my FAS to A grade, resulting in a rather poor bank account of only 5 million credits. Enough for one rebuy. I went into the community goal system, bounty hunting.

After 2 hours or so and several million credits worth of bounties, I'm down to 50% hull or so, and decide to kill just a couple more and then cash in. A wanted ship shows up and I scan it. When my warranty scan finishes, I attack it. A couple of moments later every police ship in the area has locked onto my powerplant and blasts me to kingdom come. I try to escape but my powerplant gets disabled, reboots, then gets disabled again and then I explode...

Two hours of work down the drain. Sucks. I wonder what happened, perhaps a stray shot of mine has hit one of the patrol ships, although I doubt it. So, I get into my new FAS, with not enough credits for another rebuy. Hmm.

So (foolishly, but not much other options as I don't have another ship - in hindsight I should have sold my military bulkheads for rebuy cash) I take the risk, go back into the high resource zone for some bounties. I destroy ships for half an hour. Suddenly this white imperial clipper shows up. Wanted. It starts scanning me, I warranty scan it. Then I attack and...*under attack* *shields failing*....

Again I have turned wanted and all the security ships have opened fire on me. I boost out of there and thankfully survived by a hair, but nearly got a heart attack. Now I'm waiting for my bounty to go away in 10 minutes. Then I'm cashing in my bounties so I can do a rebuy if needed.

Anyhow I'm wondering if this is some sort of weird bug, or am I misinterpreting how the system works. Can the security ships open up on you for attacking specific faction ships even if they are wanted? Can this be latency related as my connection is rather crap atm?

Log a ticket and explain what happened. (link on the launcher)

In the mean time, sell off a module or two and buy yourself an Eagle or a Viper until you have enough for a couple of rebuys.

Well, the typical explanation here is that you didn't complete a basic scan before opening fire. But if you completed a kill warrant scan, you must have done a basic one.

What weapons are you using? Tagging an authority ship while not targeting them shouldn't give you a bounty, but heavier weapons might.

Do you remember what the bounty message was? It should tell you whether it was for attacking an authority ship or your bounty target.

If only the warranty scanner paid out when you die.

I agree. Dormant bounties come back to life if you get scanned.

OP, you might need to find another system to work for a while if you have a dormant bounty.

My other suggestion is fly a keelback and make your NPC pilot in an SLF do all the shooting. They tend not to accidently shoot clean targets (unlike me). I've reduced my accidental wanted status a lot this way. FAS is a great ship, btw. I'd get one again but the Gunship will allow me an SLF sooo....that's my next major purchase. Good luck.

If you got a 10 minute wait, just a few rounds might have hit a cop. If you open fire with no Cause (scan not finished) you might get a longer cool down.
Remeber you round travel far, especially long range mod, mine goes 7865 meters , with NO damage fall off, and just one class 3 round id enough for being shown the door.

Right, so I accidentally hit a cop with a stray round the first time, got zerged, came back with a dormant bounty, got scanned, got zerged again. That doesn't make sense but at the same time does at explaining what happened :) Still a bit harsh for accidental friendly fire but oh well :D Thanks.

Never tempt fate like this. You can be caught by a bug or griefer or troll more than once and burn through more than one reuby very quickly. In fact simply re-outfitting your ship can actually reset or change the power priorities and I've had my thrusters or shields drop upon deploying hardpoints because of this. There are just too many things that can go wrong that will cost you more than one reuby in a short period of time, especially with all the trolling that goes on at CGs and Engineering bases these days.

I usually prefer a minimum of 5-10X rebuy costs in the bank if I'm flying an expensive ship so that there is a large buffer to account for all manner of accidents or misfortune that could occur in a short period of time. When I have less then this I fly very carefully and generally won't use my largest ships for combat, using other ships with low or moderate rebuy costs instead until I've built my credit balance up again to the 5-10X rebuy threshold for the larger ships. I have flown large ships with only 3X rebuys in the bank but only briefly to outfit and Engineer them and not in combat situations.

You can control how much risk you're willing to take in terms of rebuy thresholds and given the massive time and costs it can take to get a large ship fully outfitted and Engineered I set my own threshold for this rather high.

So (foolishly, but not much other options as I don't have another ship - in hindsight I should have sold my military bulkheads for rebuy cash) I take the risk, go back into the high resource zone for some bounties.

Never fly without rebuy. Ever. Sell or downgrade ship components to cover the reuby or purchase a smaller ship that allows you to run missions instead of flying a ship without rebuy costs.

Technically if one of your Pilots Federation ranks is high enough you can get a loan (which can apparently be as high as 10 million credits if you have an Elite rank) that can be used to cover a rebuy in emergency situations where you don't have the credit balance available. You really don't want to have to rely on that mechanic to work properly however and I'm not even sure where you can verify what your loan amount is in-game (it may have changed) so I wouldn't want to rely on a loan to cover my rebuy costs under any circumstances.

Something does not rhyme. Iyou accidentially hit a cop and got zerged, tough luck, BUT that should have been a 8 minute ban, cleared on H jump, so either you did not leave sysstem, and rightfully zapped 2nd time or there is a bug = ticket.
Stray shots are always cleared on H-jump, deliberate targetting and hitting, 2 day ban from system(if I remember correctly).

I got the full 7 day warrant recently. Forgot what the command was to tell my SLF pilot to stop shooting a clean target after I gave the attack order . She finished him off real good. LoL.
