Just about every persistent game I've ever played allows more than one character. I'm a little confused why so many seem to think it's not there to avoid "exploits".
Nothing you could do with two discrete characters can't be done with a second account. Except discrete characters cannot be played simultaneously, so it's more limited than two accounts.
Sorry, not buying it. There would be no downside to having more than one character, certainly no downside isn't already possible now at any rate. I can live without it; if I ever want to play a different persona I'll buy the game again quite happily - I may well do this to have a pure exploration pilot. But I'd be happy if we could have two pilots on one account.
