Ships Need a cheapish combat vessel

Ok commanders

Currently flying an ASP X kitted purely for exploration and she's a keeper.

I am after a viable combat vessel for about 40million. Not PvP (although i am not afraid to take on actual players) but wouldn't mind doing some of the combat based missions i see on the boards all the time.
I was flying a cobra mk3 for ages and loved it, but felt like it was no longer giving or taking enough damage when facing anything actually worth shooting down.
Not the best pilot but certainly not a n00b either... Confident I'd say.
Anything worth serious consideration or should i now just wait until i can afford to to buy and equip something like a python etc?

with 40 mio you are pretty much in the gap between vulture (10-25 mio) and FDL/FAS (80 mio+).

that said, i recommend spending your 40 mio on 3 ships:

a) a viper mkIII or eagle, to learn the basics. eagle if you want to learn more (as it can't tank, isn't fast, so you have to think ahead), viper if you want to learn easier

b) a courier or DBS. courier if you anyway have the rank, DBS for learning to use fixed weapons

c) a vulture. best tool for the job, might get boring fast. but a very serious pve combat ship, which can take down any target.

All of what goeman lists along with a Viper 4, the FDL is a bit of a stretch and it's flight model isn't for everyone the FAS is probably within budget if you've got the FED rank, the FDS if you want something a little more multi-role.

The Python is a fair bit outside your price range but it's a hugely competent ship in just about every role just not a master of any, if fact when engineered it can be a little too good if anything.

Don't dismiss the Asp scout because of it's average speed as it's agility and power/PD is really solid, the Keelback is an interesting introduction to SLF combat and can be surprisingly potent when engineered, the FDL is always a contender it's not as expensive to upgrade as the Python but it's never going to be cheap, look out for future Beta's so you can try them out without risk.

I recommend a Vulture. I ran a ViperIV for a long while, but found it lacked the punch and couldn't take much of a beating. When I invested in a Vulture I was rewarded with a ship that can deal it (with C3 Pulses) and take it just as well. Filled her with hull and mod reinforcements and she was golden!

Vulture can be a nasty pvp ship too. Agree with your advice though. I'd add that with the Viper and the eagle it might be worth looking at some light combat builds and a visit to farseer (or Palin) for the advanced drives.

I jumped in and picked up a vulture last night.
Started upgrading her, still a few modules left to get.

I might strip it back a bit though, may have gone bit nuts installing to much stuff, worried it might be heavier and more power hungry than it needs to be.

Feel so twitchy after flying the ASP lol.

I've fitted a gimballes MC and beam at the moment, just gone with what I know for now but might change that up if anyone has better suggestions :)

It's a good ship. Lots of people set it up in lots of different ways. Enjoy! It benefits a ridiculous amount from engies!
Edit: Mine has a fixed frag and gimballed pulse lazer. It's very modded.

I might try fixed weapons again at some point. I had them on one of my old ships and while i was getting hits in, I found i was reflecting other aspects of flying the ship. But I am a better pilot now.

I will be buying a Python before too long, probably after my next big exploration run, been keen on them for a while now but hopefully this Vulture will fill the gap.

I literally just want a capable "take down pirate lord x" missions vessel for now and something that can give griefers a run for their money (lost my ASP full of gold once to someone who was obviously just being a and hold a grude now lol)

Well, I recommend having at least one-off the hardpoints be fixed so you aren't completely blasted by chaff. As for engineering, I'd start with an upgraded powerplant as that fixes the biggest handicap of the Vulture. From there it's on you how you want to go. Don't expect to give a fully modded player ship much competition though. That requires a bit of minmaxing and a lot of experience. Just make sure you have a high wake at the ready if things go south.

What mod would you recommend?
I just brought a 5A for it last night then realised i had a modded 5A in storage lol

Viper 4 can be made into a very strong little combat ship. Stronger than the mk3. In the early days when we had no mk4 I loved the mk3 too. Mk4 is the most beautiful ship in the game, if that counts for something.

Vulture is a beast. It was the ultimate heavy fighter in the day, before everyone wanted an FDL (FDL is superb but much more expensive). Without engineering you need to learn to be good at energy management (which I love to do). With engineering that is not a problem at all anymore.
For a fighter the vulture has extremely poor sideways visibility though.

I heard good things about the Diamonback Scout. I have no experience with that ship myself. I want one and can easily afford one, but I just have not gotten around to it yet.

class 5 bi-weave thermal resists + resistance boosters (depending on your powerplant either augmented resistance or 1 thermal 1 kinetic)

i have been flying a dbs longtime in cz and res. i still use it for bhing with kws, as it has 4 utilities, but for cz the viper mkiii wins imho... if you don't fly fixed. the dbs is brilliant for fixed weapons - all or double medium railguns, double PA, small dumbfire racks etc.

mind you, the dbs is no tank, but it has strong vertical and lateral thrusters, it isn't powerstarved, quite fast without being mass restrained etc. pp.

a lovely little ship.

i have also take it for buckyball races, exploring and currently use it for surface exploration/scouting.

Goemon's advice is good. Just start with the best g1 or g2 overcharged powerplant roll you can get and move from there. Mine is very similar to goemons recommendation, but my shields are 5a thermals (not biweave). it's generally agreed by most that a good roll on a biweave is better for the Vulture though. Instead of biweave recharge I have SCBs and an accompanying heat sink.

Also, here's a nice and current pvp duel from another thread. Definitely worth a view. Vulture vs FDL, pvp fits:

So far kind of enjoying the vulture
Nowhere seems to have the shielding i want though lol

She's rocking pulse laser (engineered that) and multi cannon right now but might change the pulse to a beam

Try EDDB stations for ship and equipment locations input your location then the ship/modules you need, I run a thermal engineered 5C bi weave, one kinetic and one thermal resist booster (lower power drain), I tried G5 efficient beams but they still drain the wep cap fairly quickly although they don't have heat issues so with a single MC they could work.

Yeah I've been using EDDB but none of the listed stations have it when i arrive.
Its cool it will turn up sooner or later.

if a vultures shields aren't strong enough, that means you are (face-)tanking, what means you don't use lateral and vertical thrusters and manouverability to outmanouver your targetd, what means you are not using the vultures killer application.

i recommend going back to an eagle or dbs - once you have been forced to fly evasive and smart for some time, the vulture will feel like god-mode.

i go back to an eagle everytime i get sloppy piloting my fdl.
