Need a couple of pointers (not mouse)

So I finally decided to take up the batton of joystickness this weekend. Having decided my piloting skills are rubbish in fighting, I printed off this guide for beginner traders. But I have a few questions as I was getting stuck.

1. When you are looking for a space station to travel to on the Galaxy map, how do you find it? i.e I was in Askeban and had to fly to Chango. I was looking for ages for Chango on the map, searching all to no avail, eventually doing a forum search and finding it was in the I Bootis system.

2. So having finally plotted my destination, I hyperspaced to the IBootis system, then went into Frameshift speedy-uppy drive. Apart from getting interdicted about 5 times for scanning by the fuzz - really irritating - How do you cancel/stop the ship? The only way I could see to do it was to hit C twice, which almost shook the ship to bits and I swear thats how I got the damage to hull and modules.

Thanks for any help. I have looked everywhere but can't seem to find out these answers.

Hi Wulfy, and welcome to Elite.

1. At the moment the Galaxy map doesn't "drill down" into each system, but I think they will be adding that later. At the moment the playable universe is very small, these are all the stations -

Eranin - Azeban City
AS Prime - Beagle 2
Ibootis - Chango Dock
Dahan - Dahan Gateway
LP 98-132 - Freeport
LHS 3006 - WCM Transfer
Aulin - Aulin Enterprise

2. You can exist super cruise with a single press of C, but only when you are travelling at less than 1000 km/h. If you wait until you are less than 1000 km from the station and slow down to less than 1000 km/h you can “safe disengage” with a single press of "C" which will leave you about 20km away from your target.

There's a safe speed, below which you never take damage when you C-C, unfortunately I can't remember what the speed is right now.

Additionally, once you are within a certain distance of your target, you should get a notification something like "Destination lock enabled", and then you can also C-C to disengage safely.

1) At the moment you just have to know which system a particular station is in, or as you discovered use a forum/web search :)

2) After you Hyper Space to your target system set your throttle in the blue zone. There will be a point at which the entire throttle indicator needle turns blue...leave it there (or just below) and it will automatically adjust the speed and slow you down as you approach the station (most of the time, sometimes it bugs and goes full speed). At about 1000km it will say "safe to disengage".

Personally I try to disengage as close as possible so wait until the distance drops to 5xxkm and then kill the throttle completely. This will will result in the speed dropping nicely to the minimum for Super Cruise of 30km/s by the time you reach 100km. Then you just have to time your drop as close to zero as possible. I watch the 10s digit and hit the button as soon as I see a 1x. Seems to normally get me within 10km.
