Ship Builds & Load Outs Need a critique of this Viper MKIV please

The viper mk4 is a straight up combat ship, why in all of creation would you try and run rare trading with it when u can get several ships better suited for that at equal or lesser cost? That being said.. the Viper mk4 is like a shrunken version of the Vulture. It is fast, powerful (for its hp size) and has great shields. A rated this thing is fun and deadly... You will however have a hard time taking pythons and anacondas, simply because when u mess up it costs you heavy and it takes a long time to snipe their power plants. Ya... trading... if your trading in this ship then your an idiot. Get a hauler, adder, or even the much better cobra mk3... very fast, and the most solid rare trader upgrade you could get at its price range, period.

Ah no... I have a Type-6 for trading. I need cargo space in the Viper for Bulletin Board missions. If there's room and I'm heading that direction, I want to be able to top off with some rares just to grind a bit of coin. Just to put something in the hold.

Even though the Viper 4 has a class 4 power plant it still has a class 3 PD so weapon power is limited, beams would empty the weapon cap real quick I'd suggest medium gimballed pulse and small gimballed turrets (they compensate for the Viper lower agility).

Seeing as your build is almost 9 mil it might be worth considering some alternatives

Asp scout a little slow but super agile and long range

Entry level Vulture, it will need upgrading but even at this price point it's a great ship

Or even a Cobra 3

I have to agree with Ceekay on this one.

I had a Viper Mk IV and the main problem I found with it is it's class 3 PD and it's terrible agility (for a combat ship)

For a similar price the cobra III is better in almost every way. more internal space (3x class 4!), equal weapon and utility mounts and a better FSD and PD.

Not to mention the fact that if you screw up badly in a cobra, you can ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS leg it.

But again, if you have around 10 mil in the bank i would go straight to a vulture.

My main goals for this PVE ship are:

1. Camp in RES's for extended periods without reloading.
2. Run Bulletin Board missions.
3. Rare trading if/when it lines up with a mission.

If there are some tweaks that would make those goals easier, please let me know.

I Have no experience with the Mark IV, but have used the Mark III for a long time.
I love that ship. I am going to buy me a Mark IV when I get around to it as I think it is one of the best looking ships in the game.

I think 2 beams and 2 pulses might be problematic.
They will empty your capacitor like there's no tomorrow.
You will not be able to fire all weapons at the same time long enough to get a use out of them.
I would use a combination of energy and kinetic, so you can invoke full firepower when you need it.

If you plan to do some piracy you should keep the cargo scanner, otherwise get rid of it and replace it with something useful like chaff.

Do you really feel you need the docking computer?
I feel it is a real waste of a perfectly good slot.
Ships like the Viper are very easy to dock.
It would be worth your time to learn to dock manually
That slot could be used for more effective stuff.
You might add another 4 tonnes to your cargo capacity for example.
Or you could fit an interdictor and thus be able to take on certain bounty hunt missions that require this device.

I would also advise experimenting with the bi-weave shield generator.
I think it is a great shield type for combat oriented commanders.
This is of course a personal preference, but it would be good to try it out and discover whether it might suit you too.

This is what I do with Li'l Beastie (Viper IV). She's my budget murder machine and I consider her good practice for learning how to fly other ships. I haven't particularly seen the need to spend more on her.

So, 4Corvus, perhaps the Viper IV isn't the boat you're looking for.

Another ship that you might consider is something like this Diamondback Scout - she's perhaps a bit more fragile but she's quick and highly manoeuvrable.
