Need a little help.

Hey guys!

I'm finally in E.D but was hoping for a bit of direction as I'm completely lost with the the game mechanics at the moment. :S
I'm mostly interested in the exploration, along with finding commodities to sell for credits, and have fairly less interest in dogfights (well, at the moment until I get used to my stick and throttle).

Anyways, the main things I'm struggling with at the moment is:

Navigation - I have no idea where to actually go, and when I try to hyperdrive to random systems, I end up around the planet with nothing in sight.

Missions - When I've chose to do missions like hunt 4 fed ships around Erenin, I can't actually find the area I'm supposed to go to to find the ships.

Sales - I've read that apparently, commodities sell for different prices depending on where you sell them, although I have no idea where anywhere else is that's like Azaban City. (I suppose this kinda ties in with my navigation problem)

Hopefully you guys can give me a little direction so I can fully enjoy E.D (Even though I don't really know what I'm doing, I'm still already having an amazing time just flying around. haha)
Also, any other tips that will help me get the most out of it would be massively appreciated! :)

Thanks,
Steaks

Had this exact same problem myself at first thinking that every destination has a port when not all do. Even if you don't use the trade calculator bit the site below will tell you where star ports are.

Go into Supercruise and you will find it pretty quickly. Remember to use the right cockpit UI to choose a side when you get there! Unidentified Signal Sources are found in Supercruise as well.

The trade advisor site is useful to get you up-and-running with your first trade routes. I find it a little bit "cheaty" and probably won't use it once gamma lands but help getting my starting cash up quickly is useful for testing. I know a wipe is going to happen for the gamma release so I consider current gameplay nothing but testing and getting ready for the final launch. The nav map is the proper way of finding trade routes but until you have enough of a cash buffer to absorb losses from bad decisions. The advisor prices are always a day or two old so it isn't quite guaranteed money.

Look for Unidentified Signal Sources (USS) when exploring in Supercruise. Some are empty-ish, some contain traps but you can find gold sometimes which get you some quick cash. Remember any scooped cargo, even stuff just floating in space, will be marked as stolen and if you get scanned with it you will be blown up by security. Learn how silent running works as that is how you sneak into federation space stations or unload in anarchy space (Freeport) where the laws don't apply. If online bounty hunters can get you in anarchy space.

The biggest tip I can give you is to master the offline scenarios (especially silent running) and don't upgrade from the free Sidewinder until you have enough of a cash buffer to afford your ship insurance.

Never, ever, spend all of your cash on commodities to ship as dying will wipe you out in a single hit. Dying is currently VERY easy to do. I will never spend more than 50% of my cash on goods to haul.

Next time you go to dock point yourself at the station wall and hit your boosters. May as well get that out of the way now as everybody has done it ;) As long as you are in a Sidewinder and are not carrying cargo dying is free so get all of the stupid/experimental deaths out of your system early.

Use forger's guide! There is a wealth of useful information in there including everything you need to master Supercruise without constantly overshooting your destination. The blue pips rule

See you in the black Commander!

Thanks for the great response! (Another one of my favourite things about E.D is the awesome community!)

Knowing that there isn't a port at every destination is a massive help! I just assumed I overshot my exit and that's why I couldn't find anything. haha
So, at the moment, whet is the purpose of baron destinations devoid of anything but an empty planet?

Supercruise was exactly what I was looking for! Although, I found an unidentified signal along the way and decided to check it out... "BEHOLD, THAAR BE TREASURES OF GOLD HERE!" My inner pirate monologue exclaimed, quickly followed by not only missing the container and bumping it further into space, but also a pirate ambush...
Well, it was a fun experience and completely unexpected. :D

At the moment, I'm following this as a general idea of getting set up for trading (as I'd like to find everything through exploration) http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38804
Also, will we lose everything, including our credits upon full release?

As for the silent running, I wasn't aware I needed to do that with space-found commodities. :S
At the moment, I'm sat in Azaban City with 4 tonnes of Mineral oil I found... I'm assuming I'm in a pretty bad situation? :S

(Oh, and I'm using voice attack, and have managed to boost directly above the top of the envelope by accidentally saying boost during a Skype call... Probably should change that to something a little more specific to avoid that issue again. haha

Thanks again for the help. :)

There are only a handful that don't have stations.

I wonder if you haven't dropped out of 'cruise' mode when you get near the actual stations.

As an example, when I hit Hyperdrive from Azaban City to a nearby system (I'm not familiar with most names at the moment as I'm still new to E.D), I'll keep my speed on the blue and aim directly for my destination. Once I'm upon it, and have been told it's safe to exit, I drop out of Supercruise and always find myself with a huge planet in my face and nothing around me.

Should I be looking for a specifically named station to head towards instead of a system?

I might be wrong but you need to make sure when you finish jump from azaban to new system, STOP and change direction away from sun and go to ui 1 select the station in the new system (usual a square beside name). If that dont work meet someone in game and they might be able to help mre

It sounds as if you are selecting the planet as your supercruise destination instead of the space station.

Look for these type of icons in your targets menu, those are stations. Just target them and head over there, if you don't overshoot and come within 1k km range you can exit supercruise and you'll end up at the station.

Turns out this is exactly what I was doing. haha

So far, I've managed to: Hyperdrive to a planet, exit, supercruise and then find the station.
Is there any way to cut out the middle man (Hyperdriving to a planet) and just head directly towards a station from another station?

Also, I've just arrived at another station to try and sell the mineral oil I found, although when I got there I couldn't sell it as it wasn't on the list.
Am I right to assume that different stations deal in different commodities?
And if so, is it possible to find out which station deals in specific commodities instead of flying to each one to find out in person?

If you found the mineral oil, it's classified as 'stolen' because you don't have the required documents to own them. If you get scanned by the law, you will get a fine.

To unload them you'll have to use a black market, not every station has one and they're located under 'Contacts' in the spacestation menu.

This is a nice link, it shows you which stations have black markets.

The Federal Distress Signal is near Eranin 2.
Super cruise towards the planet, and when you get to within a couple of light seconds it should show up on your navigation panel, then target it and fly to it as if it were a station.
All your other questions seem to have been answered.
