Need a Racer - VR

Had the Rift for a few weeks now and loving Elite but I want to try a racer. I'm very fond of the Forza series so something akin to that would be great. I'm at the low end of the VR spec so something I can get decent frames in is a must. I was looking very hard at Assetto Corsa but did not want to pull the trigger without some feedback from VR veterans.

Assetto Corsa and Project Cars are the go2 in race sims for VR.

Both work very well, either will scratch that itch

I'd recommend Dirt Rally but that's a matter of taste obviously.
I think the increased spacial awareness in VR really adds a lot when running over bumps, up and down slopes etc. I found that much more exiting than the smooth racing tracks in AC or PC.
There's a wide selection of cars that really have distinctive behavior. Graphics and sound are superb.

Assetto Corsa is a very good Sim with expertly driven Physics & Tire Model, so it's just "more" than what you'll be used too with Forza. The car interiors (and exteriors) modelling is some of the best in the business, they look fantastic in VR and the overall impression you'll get is "Wow!" when you first sit in every different car. A good mix of Road and Race cars, not a great selection of tracks though but there are mod tracks available.

RFactor2 has just recently got VR support and like above has arguably the most advanced Physics & Tire Models of any Race Sim, the FFB (ForceFeedBack) is also highly regarded as the best. At the moment it runs very well in VR with more optimisation to come and is more geared towards Racing than AC is. If you're after a more concentrated racing experience then this would be better than AC but if not then AC would be the choice to try first.
Edit: RF2 is currently 50% off on Steam (£11.99), bargain for something that is going to improve over the coming months and years.

RaceRoom Racing Experience also has VR and again like RF2 is more centered around the Racing aspect, VR support was added earlier this year and works very well.

I found pCars to be buggy as hell (goes hand in hand with Elite......#Runs!) and the VR experience was somewhat off putting, hoping they improve upon it (and the general whole game) for pCars2 which is due out soon but I'm gonna await a Sale for that one I think.

So yeah if you want something like Forza, but is just better and more realistic then Assetto Corsa would be the #1 choice :)

if you pc is low end give live for speed a look.

free demo too. this one gets overlooked as its not as pretty as other racing games (truth be told i too have left it behind but i have a decent pc)

but looks aside its a very capable racing game, its a very small dev team who has been brilliant at supporting VR before ANY of the other racers dropped it.

try the free demo and if you like it consider giving them some coin. they deserve it imo.

Assetto corsa IS my go to game however, it is brilliant. pCARs is probably closer to the forza experience however, and its not bad, but its just not as good as AC, and it is hard on your pc, if you are at the low end you may want to give pCARS a swerve.

RaceRoon has free content too so again, a no brianer to try out

I've tried Race Room Experience, Rf2 and Assetto Corsa. Race Room worked well but is f2p. Rf2 works well but is still early. Looking forward to seeing where it goes. Assetto Corsa is amazing. The physics are very good and that makes a big difference in VR when the car physically behaves the same way it would in real life. Add a rig with wheel, pedals and a transducer and it even surpasses Elite for immersion.

Since your at the low end of VR, I would recommend Assetto Corsa. You should be able to dial it down enough to still enjoy it. AC uses scanned tracks and the physics are excellent. Only exceeded by IRacing which is expensive and online only for competition.

Thanks everybody for the feedback. I'm just looking to dip my toe into the water as I don't even have a wheel and will need to use the xbox controller. I have a feeling this will lead to the purchase of a wheel though, just like Elite lead to the purchase of an X52pro :)

It will. I had never been into race games, but after getting VR I tried PCars and had cool little experiences that felt amazing, like this, on the first day...

I bought that g27 for ETS2 and figured I'd take a look at racing. If you own VR you owe it to yourself to get a wheel and race :)

have you tried doing the "ring" in the F1 Ferrari?

I love the nurburgring, it is my go too course on all racing games, the AC version (paid DLC) is the most brutal of all, it is so bumpy and in VR, and in the F1 car you really feel every little bump. people who do it in real life in such a car must have at least 1 screw lose and missing a few raisins from their fruit cake.

Love Nurburgring! The track is a legend in itself.

Though I have to say for the super fast cars or the F1s, I really like how Spa flows.

I can't believe how much I am enjoying AC. When I first got VR and bought my wheel I had both AC and PCars. I hate to say it, I couldn't get on with AC. I am such a graphics fiend that PCars got the win. In a way I am really glad I did spend all my time on PCars because when I later tried AC, for whatever reason that was, AC's physics and FFB blew me away! The slightly inferiour graphics means it runs better too. :)

I rarely go back to PCars now.

the strength of the visuals in AC over pCARs is the car models imo, the level of detail is something else, compared to pCARs for instance, where often you can see the shortcuts they made when you look at areas in the car where "normal" people would not think to look, in AC it tends to be much better.

Yessir. Love the Ring. Love the Ferraris and the Williams. I spent a lot of time on Nordschleife in IRacing. The AC track and F1 cars are so close that I won't be renewing my Iracing subscription. Can't justify the cost especially in CDN$. Spa is another track that is bang on, as well.

So I pulled the trigger on AC last night. I only had time for a few hot laps but it was a lot of fun and ran just fine with the default settings. Of course, now goes the hunt for the perfect VR settings :) Also, I found myself shopping for a wheel shortly afterwards. I'm fine with a controller as I have many an hour logged with Forza but being "in" the car makes we me want to grab a wheel and use pedals. I think I'm going to have to approve the kitchen overhaul before a new Amazon box shows up for me.
