Need advice on my Vive on some unsharp ingame moments

Hello Guys, I am KodiaRok,

I am new here, got ED just like a Week ago including with my new HTC Vive and I am running into some issues I would like to get sorted, hopefully.

Now I did read some posts from People on how to setup your vive in ED, tried some settings myself but I keep getting an unsharp "background" meaning the stars around you look kinda blurry or washed away. Some goes for the Crosshair in the middle, the yellow square, it is not 100% sharp around the edges and also within.

I also did read stuff about that OpenVR Advanced Settings, but I am a bit confused, since some people say you don't need it anymore, others keep on using it however as they don't wanna adjust the .ini file always but rather keep doing it over the interface rather.

Here is my Setup really quick:

I7 4790K
32GB DDR3 Ram @ 2133MHZ
Gainward GTX180 Overclocked (one of the fastest factory overclocked card)
HTC Vive Room Setup

SteamVR Beta Settings:

Camera:

Turned off now

Performance:

Perf Heuristic Active -> Active
Allow asynchronous reprojection -> Active
Allow interleaved reprojection -> Active

Now I don't use the openvr Advanced tool, I just make purely the settings in ED itself but no matter what I do, it still got issues with the sharpness.

I turned off allow asynchronous reprojection, but that got a lot worse, it felt like that each movement I do, it's kinda mix of stuttering or building or calculating something.

I also attached some screenshots from my ingame settings which runs so far totally fluid for me, I did read that you also have to make the changes in SteamVR itself to get a better picture quality.

Could anyone help me please? The game feels after 6 Hours of playtime quite cool, although the 6 hours went mostly into training sessions and setting up my vive.

fly safe! o/

Hello Guys,

Since I can't manage my Attachments yet, as this is a brand new and fresh account, I uploaded those Pictures for you all to see.

Cheers

Try with only one of the reprojection options enabled - lots of games don't behave properly if they're both enabled. It sounds like you're seeing interleaved reprojection and are quite sensitive to the ghosting it produces, so run with just asynchronous reprojection.

Turn the in-game details down a bit and increase the in-game HMD quality setting.

Thanks for your Feedback.

When I had interleaved reprojection turned on, it looked like as I saw double images in-game, was especially visible when looking down on the joystick with all the buttons, it looked like duplication of the buttons..so I turned it off and it felt better.

Also the HMD Settings are set on the highest, 2.0 and the supersampling settings are set to 1.0.

So...with all the different posts from people with different setups, I wonder if I need to use the openvr advanced tool at all and set inside steamvr also the supersampling settings which are standard at 1.0.

My current Settings I mean are quite high up and it runs smooth so far.

2.0 HMD quality and 1.0 supersampling is asking a *lot* of your graphics card - my 1080FE / i5 4690k @4.4GHz can't cope with those settings

I agree, with high/ultra detail settings running on a 1080GTX, I'm using SS 1.0x and only 1.25 HMD Quality. With lower detail settings you could run 1.5x HMD Quality for an extra sharpness bump.

Those pictures look normal to me. So either you have higher expectations of ED than what it actually is (stars are blurry in VR) or you are getting short sighted and haven't really noticed. Do you wear glasses? I'd say visit an optician if you haven't in the last few years.

And yes, set HMD quality to like 1.25. I have an i7 7700K and 1080 overclocked and can't push past that without getting under 45fps half the time

Hello Guys,

Thanks for the reply on my matter. Now the Screenshots are taken from my Monitor and not from the Vive itself.

After speaking and chatting with some People, I made some adjustments which I would like to share with you, maybe that could also help others in Achieving a better Quality.

Now my Setup is based on a GTX1080 Factory Overlcocked Card from Gainward, with 32GB DDR3 Memory clocked at 2133MHZ and an I7 4790K Processor.

So what I did is, I downloaded the openvr Advanced Settings tool, to have an overlay in my vive without needing to alter the .ini file manually.

I set the steamvr SS from 1.0 to 2.0 and launched E: D. Launched the EDProfiler from drkaii and changed the GUI Colour from Orange to Green VR.

Here are my other SteamVR Settings as a Reference:

Perf Heuristic Active -> Active
Allow asynchronous reprojection -> Active
Allow interleaved reprojection -> Deactivated

So upon launching E: D I changed my InGame Settings like that:

E: D SS: 0.75
E: D HMD: 1.0
E: D AA: SMAA
E: D Shadows: Medium
Everything else is maxed out.

I then pressed CTRL+F, to display my InGame FPS, and made various Tests in the Training Missions, such as in the Station, outside the station, the Mission with the Rover and also the mining trainings mission.Here are the Results + -:

InStation : 45-55FPS
Outside Station: 60 FPS
SVR Mission: 60FPS
Mining Mission: 60 FPS

What I immediately came to experience is the very sharp text and everything else also looked and felt a lot better. The Stars are also a bit sharper, which is good.

When I changed the HMD Settings from 1.0 to 0.75, I had like 10-15 FPS more in General, but outside the Station it created a bit more jaggies on the edges of that cube station, so I switched it back to 1.0

When turning "asynchronous reprojection" off, when I move my head, I get some sort of stutter or judder? Don't know how you call that exactly, but it feels like some sort of stutter.

Then I altered my Settings again and changed it to the following:

E: D SS: 0.75
E: D HMD: 1.0
E: D AA: Off
E: D Shadows: Medium
Everything else is maxed out.

SteamVR Settings:

SS: 1.8

InStation : 55-65FPS
Outside Station: 70-75 FPS
SVR Mission: 75-80FPS
Mining Mission: 80-90 FPS
In Space: 90 FPS

Now I achieved a lot higher FPS, but I just don't like Jaggies, so I will play with the Settings tonight again and trying to find a better sweet spot and still achieving high quality, high fps and sharp text.

Will post my Results accordingly :)

1080GTX - any CPU over 3.5GHz

Max Detail Settings except for...

Blur Off
Depth Of Field Off
Shadows Medium
Bloom Medium
Ambient Occlusion Low
SS 1.0x
HMD Quality 1.25x

In a Rift CV1, hit Ctrl-Numpad1 to turn ASW OFF.
In a Vive, turn Interleaves Reprojection OFF, and turn Asynchrounous Reprojection On.

90fps in stations,
90fps in space
90fps is RES (most of the time).

Momentary / slight slowdowns (when menus pop up, occasionally on planets and in heavy RES fights but generally pretty good. Minimal judder.

I'm using very similar settings with the exception of in-game SS set to 1.25x

I notice better sharpness when increasing SS vs. HMD for some reason. Settings like SS 0.65 / HMD 1.5 look worse to me than SS 1.25 / HMD 1.25 in VIVE

Still in search of the most balanced settings for 1080 and 2.2 update.

I'm running slightly OC'ed 1080 SC @ 2025 in game boost and 4790K @ 4.5 boost.
