Need advice with major surgery coming up.

Hey folks-

I have to have open heart surgery soon and was thinking about spending my recovery in space.

I won't be able to stay hunched over a keyboard so I was wondering about trying something else out.

I have an Oculus Meta Quest 2. How well would it work out if I moved my PC into the living room and sat back in the recliner with the VR headset and relaxed back with an XBOX controller?

Does anyone play using a similar setup? Could I play all facets of the game that way or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you

Sorry to hear. Wish you the best for the surgery.

I cannot comment on how well or not you can play with a controller, I have ever only played with a HOTAS. But a lot of people, so I guess it will do after memorizing the controls. You cannot really chat or use third-party tools like INARA and EDDB without a keyboard though. For that I have a small wireless keyboard and mouse combination, with the keyboard being mounted on a sawhorse together with my HOSAS.

About the seated position, I am guessing it depends how far back the position of your recliner is adjusted and if you need to rest your head on the headrest or not. My pilot's chair is an IKEA Poäng, so the poor man's version of a recliner - a rather relaxed and leaned back sitting position compared to a desk chair, but still fairly upright. I can play for hours on end in that chair without getting back ache or anything, and my headset doesn't get in the way of the headrest, which I would guess would be the main issue ergonomics wise.

If you need to have your head rested against the headrest I guess wearing a headset might be an issue. I have no personal experience with the Quest 2, but my Reverb G2 is rather uncomfortable and moves if I try to rest my head against the headrest of my desk chair.

I often play with the quest 2 and Xbox controller setup.

Using virtual desktop means that I can switch easily to 2d desktop whilst still in the headset so other tools are available.

With VR you need to be looking forward to look virtually forward though. In your recliner, are you going to be looking forward or angled up with the headset? I'm not sure that there's a way of reangling the floor within steam VR.

Afraid I have nothing to offer with regard to VR advice, sorry, but good luck with the surgery. You might wonder why I bothered replying - basically your user name cracked me up 😁

I hope everything goes well with your surgery - I play in my living room sprawled on my settee with a Quest 2 HMD & wireless Xbox pad, and the only time I need to go ‘out of headset’ is when searching for systems on the Galaxy map. I have a keyboard with illuminated characters, so I either look down the nose-gap or double-tap the headset to use pass-through view when I need to enter a system name. I don’t use third-party tools but I have on occasion used the Oculus feature of pinning desktop windows to watch livestreams while playing.

As mentioned by HappyMoonMonkey, there is no way of angling the floor in VR headsets away from its actual level - so if you’re planning on gaming while horizontal you’ll have a cricked neck in no time 😁

These days I wouldn't be supprised if someone filmed it on their smart phone and then uploaded it on ticktock!

I modded an IKEA chair to play in VR, so from the head angle, something not too laid back can work.
As for playing with an XBox controller - only easy mode, I'm afraid. A controller simply has too few axes and buttons for full control in ED. I use dual sticks (at the 32 button limit) plus a small keyboard mounted to the chair.

good luck in your recovery. I only play in VR and whilst I don't play only using a pad it is definitely possible (I have recently been dabbling with the steamdeck and that has the equivalent of an Xbox pad build into it .... yet again I was impressed as how good FD have made the game so flexible to different controls.

the poster who said you would get a crocked neck.... I may be missinderstanding because in my experience you get comfy then hit the recentre view button and it configures your display perfectly Infront of you regardless of your angle.

the only thing you may find challenging is route planning so you may need to limit what you do. also maybe buy voice attack (it's cheap) and one of the many crew mate voice attack profiles. this will allow you to configure some controls to voice. it makes life easier and is also cool.

I’m afraid you are mistaken if you think the recenter view button alters the vertical view - you can easily check by looking upwards and then hitting the button.

As far as I’m aware, no VR games allow you to change your floor angle. If someone is restricted to being horizontal the only option I can think of is playing the game on a virtual flatscreen - the media player programs I use allow you to grab & reposition the screen wherever you want and allow a desktop mirror view - but then you’re having to play the non-VR version of the game.

damn... i really want to go and check now. unfortunately my wife will likely scoop my ........... eyes ;) ..... out with a rusty spoon if I dissapear to the man cave today.

I must have put 4000 hrs into VR.since 2014 and I genuinely never noticed you could not recenter the vertical view.

seems a crazy over sight not to allow that as an option esp as one of the potential none gaming use cases for VR was to allow bed ridden people an escape from their own "prison" .

I use a T1600m on my lap when I'm sitting in my recliner in the living room and I use a wireless Logitech keyboard/mousepad.

Hey folks-

I have to have open heart surgery soon and was thinking about spending my recovery in space . . .
I had OH surgery about 18 months ago. If my experience is anything to go by, nobody is going to be able to give you any advice on the best means of doing most things. Even in hospital recovery, it was quite clear that everyone's reaction to the trauma is different - so my experience isn't anything to go by.

They kick you out of the hospital once you're able to climb a flight of stairs on your own and you'll have six weeks of cautious activity - no driving or lifting - while the two new halves of your sternum knit back together and the wounds to your heart heal (and, possibly, those to your leg).

I've been an avid ED player since before launch and this was the longest period in which I didn't play. I don't recall getting back in the game, but must have at some time.

The best advice comes from your own body: it will let you know when you've done something wrong, so listen carefully.
It's fine if you want to PM me here about anything.

I don't have the VR setup, but I have always used an Xbox controller.

Works perfectly fine once you get used to it.

Good luck as said above use you can use an Xbox controller for most stuff. I’ve moved from HOTAS VR only over to flat screen Xbox controller for all on foot stuff, taking Apex everywhere. I’ve also started flying with the controller, I make use of Aito Landing/Take off and super cruise assist a lot but trading is perfectly doable, I’ve not managed to fight yet but that’s a skill problem not a Controller problem. I would suggest the proper Xbox controller vs a copy, better axis support. Also with the Xbox controller I find combining button pushes into a sing action provides a lot more buttons - D pad up + A. D pad Up + X etc etc.

I’ve added a couple of combos to the default Xbox layout - LB+RB activates night vision and A+X toggles orbit lines - so with the default mappings (in which the four colour buttons are combo’d with the Dpad and bumper buttons) that gives me 42 functions + two sticks on my controller.

The added bonus (that I really like) is the legend that pops up if you hold one of the colour buttons for long enough - Ah CMDR, you’ve forgotten what the cargo scoop is bound to again? 😅
