need better way of approaching rings for mining

Shouldn't FD have given us a better way of entering a planets ring for some mining by now.
Having to approach the rings in supercruise and smash right into them seems quite unsophisticated and basic and it can also damage the ship as well.

Slowing right down before we are transferred to the rings interior can help stop the ship taking damage and being flung around like a rag doll but it still feels more like we are being interdicted than it does approaching a planetary ring for a spot of mining.

I think removing the after effects of being forced out of supercruise i.e. the ship damage, violent disorientation and the fsd cooldown when in proximity of the ring could maybe help .

I'd like to be more helpful but it looks like you are doing it wrong. There is no ship damage or spinning when I drop into rings.

Are you following the 7s rule / safe dropout speed upon approach?

As with all things in Elite, practice makes perfect. At the moment you are approaching too fast. Before you finally dip into the ring, you need to be at minimum cruise speed. Bring it (almost) to a dead stop and then dive in.

If you are approaching a RES site, aim to keep your speed such that the time to arrive doesn't drop below 6 seconds (aim for 7 seconds to be on the safe side) and you will arrive at ideal distance and speed in the blue zone (in the left hand indicator) and an indicator that tells you "ready to disengage."

You don't get that outside of RES sites, so use the above precautions for jumping into rings. No spin, no damage, no problem [noob]

Oh, by the way, I note you recognize the need to slow right down. It becomes an instancing thing ... you have to transition into the asteroid field, similar to instancing for entering the surface zone above a planet, or the space outside a planetary port. Just something we have to accept.

Hey there Cobra Mk2.

The thing is if you enter the ring above the speed of 1Mm/s it will result in an emergency drop and therefore your ship will spin around. If you approach the ring in about the same way as you approach a RES-site in the ring and slow down below 1Mm/s then you will "gently" drop out of supercruise and thereby avoid the spinning ship and hull damage.

Hope this helps :)

It would be nice to be able to drop waypoints for the nav computer to lock onto, so you could take advantage of the semi-helpful automatic speed adjustment your Nav computer provides.

That said it's entirely possible to drop into a ring and take no damage, as posted above just make sure you're below 1Mm/s and you'll be fine. Without nav lock though you'll accel and decell much faster than you're accustomed to.

There are a couple of things you can do to mitigate the dramatic speed swings. You can drop in on the inside of the rings, nearest the planet, the mass shadow of the planet will dampen your FSD accel so you won't need such fine control to stay at the appropriate speed. Approaching from a very shallow angle is also helpful, I usually fly almost parallel to the ring before dropping in so I can adjust my speed properly and avoid an emergency dropout. Being near the very inside edge of the rings also makes it very easy to dodge out of the way of a ring system that I'm approaching to fast, then I just nose back up and approach from the 'bottom'.

As with anything, practice makes perfect.

I lock on to the planet as the destination target, that allows me to use the 75% throttle / 00:06ttg feature and so approach the ring plane at safe speed.

When you get close to the ring, skim the surface and slow down to under 100k/s. Could probably go higher than that, but no need tp chance it. The folks above with the 7s/70% rule are right on; don't just nose dive in anywhere above 1Mm/s.

The transition is still a bit visually jarring, but hopefully that will change in some future patch. Or season.
