Need Clarification of Terms - SS, HMD, Steam VR Auto Resolution, Per App Auto Resolution, etc.

I have spent the better part of a week sorting through all this and quite honestly, I don't believe I fully understand how to efficiently/effectively improve my WindowsMR headset performance in Elite.

First off, my system setup is as follows:
Win 10, Dell Visor WMR HMD (1440x1440)(2)
Clevo P870KM-1
-GTX 1080
-16GB RAM
-500GB SSD

So right now, I have things settled out to where I have a constant 90 FPS across the board. However I feel like I am under utilizing the card. Based on all the anecdotal statements that GTX-980 cards are running circles with VR High etc, I am wondering what I am doing wrong.

I'm set up as follows from the Elite Dangerous graphics settings:
Texture Quality - High
Shadow Quality - Medium
Bloom and Blur off
AA - SMAA (interesting enough if I turn AA off, my frames tank in station....a lot)
Super Sampling - 0.65
AO - off
Environment Quality - High
FX Quality - Low
Reflections Quality - High
Material Quality - High
HMD Quality - 1.25 (lower and it looks like I had a few beers...higher and it looks like I had a lot of beers)
Terrain Quality - High (Work set to 1/4)
Terrain LOD - High
Terrain Material Quality - Medium
Terrain Sampler Quality - Medium
Jet Cones - High
Vol Effects Quality - Low

My global app Steam VR Super Sampling setting is in manual override at 150% (recommended is 189%)
My local app Steam VR Super Sampling setting for Elite is at 100%
Asynch repro is on
Asynch always on is off
asynch interleave (?) is off

I feel like I am missing something. Things look O.K. Immersion is awesome but there is a sterile look to the graphics. Maybe its more like I feel like I am missing something performance wise and that I should be able to get more out of the 1080 than I am.

If I so much as move HMD to 1.5 I start seeing massive Late Starts in the Steam VR frame monitor (looks like my HR monitor after a heavy workout :D ) My FPS drops to 65-70 and I get frequent judders. Performance tanks and while it looks much clearer, Its a mess at times.

My question is in what priority should be be setting super sampling at? SteamVR only? Elite only? Combo?

I saw some threads on what settings appear to eat more in resources (like this one: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/422735-Best-Graphics-settings-guide) so I am going to visit some of my medium settings here tonight but as to the big resource devourer, I feel like there are just too many combinations and that I may be missing the most optimum settings. Or more likely, I haven't a clue to what I am doing and just blindly flipping switches hoping for the best. As of now I have a working solution but something is nagging at me that I am not stretching my computers legs with the right settings.

Anyhow, I appreciate anyone taking the time to help me figure this out and hopefully I learn a bit more about how to tweak this in. Thanks for reading this wall of text. Cheers!
