Need help deciding which Power to pledge.

I'm really torn on the cool weapons they offer. I'm fairly noobish when it comes to combat but I really like it and want to eventually get into pvp. Right now I fly a Chieftain but maybe possibly get a krait 2 as well sometime soon.

I saw a video on the weapons they offer from Exigeous and he said the multi cannons from one power(forget his name) are quite powerful and they sound awesome. I have to say I'm a sucker for weapons that sound great with a high rate of fire. The regular mc's just sound very shallow I think.

Anyway if that's not a good weapon choice what should I be looking at? I heard the pack hounds are op and good for piracy which is something that interests me.

The Enforcer cannons have a great 'pompom' AA sound & are as effective in a small hardpoint as medium MCs. they have ammo issues but this is the age of cheap synth so who's worried. one mining trip will cover any synth needs for many months.
Enforcer cannons are indisputably the best Powerplay module and happily belong to the best Power so Utopia is your clear choice. this msg is brought to you by the independent think tank: 'The Centre for Reeducation Studies'

Well for starters the question is "which module do I want to get first" since you can pick up all of them eventually, all it costs is time.

I have just started out on that route myself and have decided to begin with Hudson for the Pacifiers bc they look real stronk. RP-wise I detest Hudson so I just want to get it over with.
After that the next step will probably be the Cytoscrambler, bc I want to try out a Cyto/Pac build. Again I don't like what the Archon stands for so I plan to defect immediately after stocking up.

And so on -- if I don't lose interest, I might also get APAs, Hammers, Prismatics, Pack Hounds... not necessarily in that order.

Eventually I intend to settle into a Power to stay (and maintain rank 2 to grab the bonuses), I just haven't decided which yet (and by the looks of it I have at least half a year to decide). RP-wise, I lean towards the more idealistic of the bunch, like Mahon, Winters, Antal or possibly the Princess. Unfortunately though, all their bonuses are rubbish, at least when you're not interested in BGS. So I might in fact go for ALD for that sweet bounty bonus (currently it would be +50% bc she's #1, ofc that can change). Ofc I don't really need the money at this point.

Oh and it might also be worth it to buy yourself into Rank 5 with Rui before handing in large amounts of Exploration data. Costs 100 Mil credits to fast-track and I have no idea if the payouts are worth it, but it should definitely help with getting Elite Explorer. ^^

However, since I'm an absolute beginner concerning PP, there are some things that aren't quite clear to me yet:
1. When do you rank up -- immediately when you hit a Merit threshold, or only when the next tick begins?
2. Do you get the rank 2 bonuses anywhere, or only in systems controlled or exploited by your power?

I would suggest choose the power with the ethos that suits you. The weapons are pretty irrelevant when it comes to choosing a power. You can bounce around all the powers to pick up the various weapons if you want. It will just take time and some of them really are not worth it....
Which power you stay with will depend on how you feel you fit in with what they do, how they work and what you want out of it.
However, if you do decide to bounce around the powers for the weapons please do the right thing, find their discord or communication tool (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...he-powerplay-community-for-each-power.542833/) and speak to the people running the power so you can either help whilst you're with them or at least not damage any ongoing work.

Maybe it would be helpful if you or anyone else could list which weapons/items are useless and why?

That'd help out my decision and planning. I know I want the prismatics and perhaps the enforcers

Roughly what I gleaned from various other threads when researching the topic. Not my own opinions for the lack of experience, but this seems to be the consensus:

Good:
Prismatics
Pacifiers

Okay:
Adv. PA
Pack Hounds
Cytoscramblers
Imp. Hammers

Everything else seems to float between "extremely niche" and "rubbish".

Ofc the utility of the modules can vary by your intended playstyle and the ship you put them on. For instance, if you have an agile ship like the Chieftain, with 3 Small Hardpoints and excellent convergence, those various Class 1 Fixed weapons are certainly more appealing than if you are planning for a, say, Clipper.

You can join another right away, but you will be a target for the previous power you pledged to for 2 or 3 days.

Prismatic Shields are the most useful item. They have the stats of a larger shield generator, but they fit into a smaller slot.

If you wish to cancel SCBs the imperial hammer with feedback is great.

If you are ever to PvP, Efficient Plasma Accelerators are meta and have great stats and no PP weapon comes close. Pacifiers are good, but a good pilot can stay out of range. Shock cannons have limited ammo and do not deal enough damage. Ultimately successful combat is a race to do the most damage in the least amount of time.

OK thanks thats why I left Hudson to join Duval and get the prismatics

Well I left Hudson but now its not letting me pledge to anyone else.

I think the cooldown is 12 hours or something... so, bad timing, you probably can't join before the tick ticks. :/
Slange Lands was a bit imprecise: if I understood the rules correctly, you have two options to switch powers:
A.: defect to another power, which is immediate (I think) and you carry over half your merits (if any), but the previous power will hunt you for a while (1 day initially).
B.: leave, which means nobody is mad at you, but you have that 12 hour cooldown and lose all merits you might have.

So I suppose you have just lost a week. :/

Ah ok no worries, But how does a 12 hr cooldown translate to losing a week? Im a bit confused

Because a new tick (week) started a few hours ago, and - if the guides are correct - if you pledge on a Wednesday it counts as a whole week and you'd be in week 2 now.
Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, for sure. ^^

Fwiw I shipped 100 cargo last night (fast tracked for 900k) and got 100 merits, so if all works as I think it does I'll be rank 2 now and enjoy a bounty bonus in Hudson systems, which should easily make up my investment.

I may have stumbled upon a teeny tiny bug. Rly not a big deal at this point, but I wonder if it's a known issue.

So, I pledged on tuesday and fast-tracked 100 merits yesterday (wednesday). So today (thursday) I was promoted to Rating 2 and so it shows on my PP summary.
HOWEVER, I only got a 1000cr voucher instead of the 50.000cr I should receive at rating 2.

Ofc I don't care about 49k credits, esp since the bounty bonus definitely works and made me over a million extra credits today. I'd just like to know what's up. ^^
