Newcomer / Intro Need help entering Galaxy Map

I realize to vast majority of players this may seem like common sense but I have just spent two hours stuck in the starting station. Watched a ton of you tube videos, tutorials and did some reading.

No where can I find when I enter the menu to highlight galaxy and system map which button I press to actually enter it tried almost every key on keyboard and getting frustrated. tried enter no joy can anyone let me know how to do this please and what buttons enters things once its selected.

My left side info panel on my ship which is the one with the maps section in it is mapped to f2 if that helps.

No clue how to actually access the map any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to answer does the game not have it mapped by default is that why I was having so much trouble?

also would you happen to know which section and specific item I need to map under controls theirs so much stuff in there overwhelming at the moment.

Thanks again for the help much appreciated.

By default the space key and weapon one trigger (mouse 1, stick 1 etc) should activate menu items, I believe. If not then map them or whatever else you wish to the function.

The thing you want to map is UI PANEL SELECT under INTERFACE MODE.

You'll notice that in may cases the same key can be mapped to different functions depending on the context - ie flight, menu, etc - but in other it is only mappable to a single function.

Take some time to experiment with all this and don't try to begin playing "seriously" yet - you can't lose anything if you just mess around in the starting ship, so get in and start trying things out :)

Welcome to the galaxy, commander!

Thanks for the info very helpful, I will be sure to go through the key bindings and practice with the controls before getting to serious into the game.

Now I am just working on getting my reshader to work and im all set.

There is a pre-flight checklist toggle option that may help you assimilate the absolute basic bindings faster, in addition to the tutorials.

Shift + A access the control panel to your left with the Galaxy Map / System Map and Nav locations.

Yeah, by default, you're expected to faff with the UI (left panel etc.). The official manual describes it like this:

You can access the galaxy map by using the Pilot’s interface Focus Mode, navigating to the Navigation Tab of the Target Panel, then highlighting and selecting the galaxy map button in the bottom left of the panel

You're right though, binding a key is the way to go, a lot less fiddly. The keybinding screen is a bit of a beast, and poorly organised, but persevere and you'll find pretty much everything there- except for a key to request docking! Apparently, they don't want you to have a key for that, but be forced to faff with the UI, for reasons of "immersion" :)

If only they would put in a binding for the system view for explorers.

Crosses fingers for the next update...

um... you can set a key bind for system map now... it came in with 1.2 ... it's in the patch notes

I have mine to F1 and it makes VA set up really quick

EDIT

Options > Controls > Mode Switches > Open System Map (directly below "Open Galaxy map" )

It's a little buggy for now, though - it sometimes opens the wrong system (previously viewed or visited, don't remember). Exit and re-open, and it's your current one.

That is the one thing bugging me. Especially since before I realised that's what was happening I jumped out of systems thinking 'just another load of ice planets'. It was only when I found one that had already been explored that I realised it was showing me the same system I had just looked at.

It isn't a big problem but it is a bit of a pain when exploring.

The problem is ... such a obvious bug should have been fixed before release
