Need help finding a star in the game

Hello one and all. I need a bit of help by someone with more knowledge than me :) I am looking for my avatar.

It is the star V838 Monocerotis and is in the Monocerotis constellation (which I cannot see). I have been to the co-ordinates listed on the wikipedia page (I guess they are the same format) but there are no stars at that location.

It could simply be that the star is not in the game, but that would be a shame. Can anyone shed anymore light on it for me?

I did some looking around, some of the HD-named stars in that specific region are indeed in the game, so be hopeful!a

I tried the search in navigation with no luck. I wonder if that search bar actually searches all 450,000,000,000 star systems!

If you click on the co-ords on the wiki page then it takes you to a close up star field. I had a look for a few of the HD numbered stars close by and couldn't see it there :( Are the ones you found around those co-ords?

I don't see it in there with any of the designations used by the SIMBAD database. Trouble with looking at nearby HD numbered stars is that they may be much closer or further away and just happen to lie along the same line of sight and not really be near it.

The wiki coordinates (right ascension and declination) are not the same as the coordinates ED uses. What they give is a direction pointing at the object.

There's no way that anyone can give you precise coordinates for an object 20,000 light years away. We can't measure that well! We know it's in a particular direction, but finding the distance to far away objects is one of the major challenges of astrophysics and requires a string of educated guesswork.

(It's something like: "we know from the spectrum of light what sort of star it is, and so we know how bright it should be for any given distance; taking account of the dimming of the light from dust between us and the star, we think it's probably around" *pins tail on donkey* "20,000 light years...")

I can't find the star yet but will keep looking!

...no luck, guessing that there's no model for a nova remnant (or whatever V838 really is!) - on the plus side, it should be easy for FD to add extra stars to the "known stars" bit of the catalogue so it could show up later.

Thank you all for your help, I wasn't expecting it to be easy and was more hopeful about the coordinates than anything else ;)

I shall keep scanning the map going for my own 'pin the tail on the donkey' :D

Who knows someone from the team may even read this and tell me where it is, or take pity on me and add it hehe.
