Need help getting E:D Vive to not look like dog poo

I just got my vive a couple days ago and set it up. I've enjoyed Elite Dangerous for a very long time and I was really looking forward to flying around in VR, but, after maybe 3 or 4 hours of playing with settings, and 3 or 4 hours of actually playing in VR, I have to say - it looks like total crap.

I've got an EVGA gtx 1080 FTW, i5 6600k, 32g of ram, and even after playing with the VR settings a lot, the game is just so incredibly ugly.

Maybe it's just going from 4k to this is too big a jump but, everything's grainy. Ships are blocky. It's hard to make out anything in the distance. The resolution seems atrocious. Any cool lighting effect is ruined by the giant smear of color blur that emits from it. Everything's pixellated, like 640x480 quality, and messing with quality doesn't seem to change much about it. It's so bad I'm pretty sure I'm returning my vive if I can't make this acceptable.

Is the game supposed to be this damn ugly?

Does anyone else have a nice suite of settings they can share? Something I can try? I've dug through year old fixes and settings that haven't changed much for me at all so far, but I'm willing to try again if someone is confident they can help me to get this to look a lot better.

I have to believe people are having better performance than me, because I just can't believe people think playing like this is fun.

The rez in the headset is not comparable to a 4k monitor. Period. Play with HMD quality until you're happy with the clarity and then set visual settings to cope.

Thanks for the response.

I definitely wasn't expecting 4k quality. I've gotten some help and pointers from a few people and figured out I've got everything configured rather well. I guess I just wasn't prepared for the massive difference in quality - everyone always says what a blast they had in VR, I just kind of took them at their word. I'm sure it's fantastic for many, but for me the huge drop in detail and resolution is just a dealbreaker.

To be blunt, people have been struggling with the Vive overall in ED. For this, and because room scaling is still at "novelty" stage as far as I am concerned, I ran with the Rift.

Check out this thread, though. Some good stuff in here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...t-DK2-CV1-Vive-VR-Experience-Guide-Compendium

"Novelty" ...

Without room scale, even in E D so just I can look around my cockpit, VR just isn't quite VR(not literally, you know what I mean.) Anyone with a Vive can attest to that. Anyone who plays Onward, Raw Data, Solis Project, etc, etc anyway. The restriction, to me, would feel like going back to playing DOOM with no mouse - just the KB - as in I wouldn't feel completely in control of my own head.

Meh I've played with a Vive and it felt exactly like that. It was amazing for 2 or 3 minutes, I then sat down to do some fighting, and forgot room scaling was even a thing.

Unless you plan to talk walks around your cockpit every 5 mins to admire the workmanship, that's exactly what a novelty is ;)

I have 37 VR titles... There's probably 5 that are seat bound. ED, PCars, ETS2 and I'm just throwing 2 more in there because I'm sure there's a couple more... I suppose it would be a novelty if all you did was play ED.

Aye, hence "as far as I am concerned".

I dedicate enough of my life to ED. I don't need to start picking up other VR games - I'll forget what outside looks like!

Perhaps when the whole thing has progressed enough to take care of that annoying limitation called "room space" and some titles start making better use of it I'll be more interested.

I was in the same boat as you a month ago, was thinking of going VR.

I got a new monitor instead, so after reading your post, I'm pleased with my choice.

I tested VR at EGX and to me, the lack of quality . . . enough said.

I think another 2 years the gap will have closed some what, then I'll invest.

Bad experiences are far/few in between. Most people are in awe, and those that aren't...are generally using Vive.

Heads up, folks:

Hi everyone,

We’ve had a number of people mentioning that their experience in the HTC Vive is not as sharp or contains resolution/focus issues which are specific to aliasing.

We wanted to post up a quick update on our progress relating to these issues and keep you informed.

We’re implementing a fix shortly which will improve the quality of focus on the UI which we hope will significantly improve the readability. We are continuing to work on additional anti-aliasing techniques and hope to be able to share more news on these improvements soon.

We understand the frustration that this can cause and we truly appreciate your patience while we continue to work on additional fixes.

Thanks

Zac

It was a while back but I believe is still being worked on, and testament that this is definitely something around Vive.

Did you try it with Supersampling on? With a 1080 you should be able to hold 1.5 with no issues.

Also get Steam VR beta and activate Asynchronous Reprojection.

Can I remind people of the this:
• OS: Windows 7/8/10 64 bit
• Processor: Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core CPU or better / AMD FX 4350 Quad Core CPU or better
• Memory: 16 GB RAM
• Graphics: Nvidia GTX 980 with 4GB or better
• Network: Broadband Internet Connection
• Hard Drive: 8 GB available space

VR (minimum) specification. So your processor below spec.

From this topic:
Valve Releases Asynchronous Reprojection support in SteamVR Beta Client! Post your feedback here!

"After just switching on Beta and returning stream VR config file back to before any changes.

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (Yes my OS still works fine and no Windows 10 overheads)
Intel Core i7 4790 4.0Ghz on all cores.
16 GB
Nvida Geforce GTX 980TI

Model Draw Distance 90%
Texture Quality High
Shadow Quality Medium
Bloom off
Blur off
Anti-Aliasing SMAA
Super Sampling x1.00
Aambient Occlusion medium
Environment Quality High
Depth of field High
Reflection Quality Low
Meterial Quality Ultra
HMD Image 1.5
Galaxy Map Medium
Terrain Quality Ultra
Terrain Work 50%
Terrain Material Ultra
Terrain Sample High

Tested with surface, stations, nav beacon, Jet Cone on Exploring mission.. No skips, double images or jumps in frame rate.
I will say I can not find ANY graphic setting that reports 90 fps (As listed by ED), but all the above have 45fps and does not drop below 40fps and all VERY playable and looks great. "
