Horizons Need help here...what is the optimum graphics card to run elite 2.3 effectivly??

Since 2.3 my computer has been struggling to keep up with the graphics, all my characters have brown marks on their faces and stars and planets take up to 10 seconds to render now...these issues were never apparent in 2.2.

I have heard that the brown face issue can be solved with a batter graphics card, as for star rendering I am not so sure. I don't want to buy a new graphics card on a 'What if' scenario.

I am just wondering what is a decent card I can get for $300 or less that will bypass the issue?

Thankyou CMDRs! :)

Youre looking for a okayish gpu with dx11.2 support but this issue depends on what the rest of your system is made of. For example new generation gpus are quiet cheap and offer muuuch much great performance compared to the older generation of gpus that are the same price. But these newer gpus for example, use mainly eufi bios and have pci 3.0 sockets and stuff, while an older motherboard only supports legacy bios, while also only supporting cpus from that generation which might cause bottleneck issues or simply whole stuff might not be snoothly compatible for some reason. Possibilities are a bit overwhelming :p

Im writing because a while ago I was in your shoes. I had an extra older desktop pc in another house that was struggling to run ED and I was almost certain Id get issues with compatibility if I tried slapping one of the new gpus on. I simply searched a bit for a nice gpu with dx11.2 support (necessary for horizons to run) and bought a second hand old gtx 560ti (it was released in 2011 lol) for like, less than 100$ from a local place. Runs smooth fixed 60 fps on a bit customized high settings. VR is a different business though. But if your motherboard and rig is a new one, absolutely go for those new gen cheap gpus out there.

ok then :)

I will get to looking into further cards and GPU/CPUs immediately!

Thank you very much for your assistance! :)

first thing you need to do is include you current pc spec, what res, refresh rate and settings.

what is you minimum fps you class as optimum.

From there I think other users who have upgraded with similar computer specs might give you a suggestion.

screen shot attached is elite running @ 4k, Ultra settings, vysnc off.

(My own WorkStation is a I7 4820K @4.2 Ghz, GTX Ichill X3 1080 8GB Vram(not OC), 32 GB DDR3 Quad Channel, running from a Ram Drive.)

Best Of luck m8ty and I hope it goes well for ya[smile]

Hehe, I ain't exactly a tech expert haha... in the case of the latter post how much would that full system cost?:)

I thought it would be as simple as slapping in a graphics card but it would appear that not to be the case... anyone want to give me a shopping list haha :D

I can spend $300-$400 where nessicary, this will give me enough spare change to buy the Rift ;)

Thank you all greatly for your input!:)

Wait... you want to play in VR? Ok, yes, that will require a stronger graphics card.
Before I saw that I was going to suggest a Radeon RX 470.
You'll need to get advice from someone that's playing with VR. I am pretty sure a GTX 1070 would do it, but it's right at the upper end of your price range.
ED isn't all that demanding, but VR needs to go smoothly or you'll get sick.

My 770 runs Elite at ultra, but would be the absolute bottom of the barrel for anything in VR - 970 and above for VR.

Rift VR user Id say effectively =980Ti or better. I run a 1080ti and i can run it at max settings while exploring but i still get a stutter and a framerate drop during combat/stations. I play normally on "medium VR" with a unlocked i7 Kabylake, 32 gig ddr4, 1080ti. It runs smooth as butter and looks great imo.
