Newcomer / Intro need help on mining hauler...

I am looking at trying my hand at mining. I plan to buy a hauler and store my cobra... don't want to risk it. I could use some help on outfitting for best results and maybe where to look. assume it will be the asteroid belts at most systems but..... any help would be appreciated.

Personally I wouldn't bother. It takes way too long. The only time I tried it, I got 4 rutile for a mission and it took me over an hour to get it. That's from a regular asteroid field. Also be aware there are hostiles in some fields so be prepared to run if you see another ship there.

well first of all I'm not a very good miner and it doesn't pay as good as the other things in Elite does. However you shuold try it out at least once just to see how it fits your stile of playing...
Personatly I would use the cobra over the hauler to do the mining or an adder and buy as big a refinery as you can afford and a mininglaser and thats pretty much all you need and as much cargo space you can fit onto whitchever ship you decide using....
KEEP your shield as you will be very close to the BIG rock in space and you don't want to scratch you paintjob ;) the bigger refinery will allow you to keep more of the ggod stuff coming from the rocks when you shoot them(ca 10-12 pieces pr.rock)
First shoot at the rock until 1 small bit comes off then target it to see if it's worth picking up only presius metal are worth it like GOLD palladium Platinium the rest u should just dump into space again perhaps keep the silver too but even that I wouldn't keep if I was in a hauler...
Where to mine... Well don't go to a RES site but choose either a ring planet without RES sites or dive into the ring(carefully) in another place than the RES site it self this way ther wont be as many Pirate to shoot you op while mining actually you could be all alone while mining this way... I did it this way back when I tried it....
Anyway good luck with it cmdr... and fly safe hopfully someone more experience in mining than me could help you further.... :)

What Universal Evil said, more or less. I find gas giant rings to be better mining spots than asteroid belts simply because they have more rocks in and the rocks are closer together. You can only chip off a dozen or so pieces before 'exhausting' a rock, so the less time you spend moving to the next one, the better.

Buy the highest grade refinery you can afford. the higher the grade, the more bins you get which means you can store more types of mineral/metal. With only one or two bins you'll be spending more time juggling cargo and venting stuff you can't keep than you will mining.

I *think* that mining metallic sites is more profitable than mining rocky sites but I haven't really tested this. You can't mine in icy sites yet.

Adder, medium mining laser, most slots on the refinery that you can afford, don't ditch your shield.

The medium laser runs hot, but is much quicker at chunks. The refinery is all about bin slots, the more you have, the more varied rocks you can chew.

Go for metallic or metal rich planetary rings, in pristine condition if you can find them. The state of the ring is shown in the planetary info on the system map.

The best items to mine from highest to lowest selling price is platinum - 19,000cr, palladium - 14,000cr, gold - 10,000cr and silver - 5,000cr. You can find all those in metallic rings and belts. You can also find silver in the metal rich areas.

You'll want to visit common, major or pristine reserve areas. Definitely stay away from the low and depleted reserve areas cause the time involved in mining is not really worth it. You will get between 8 to 12 chunks from a single asteroid. You can get 30% chunks from common reserves up to 60% chunks in pristine reserves.

If you don't mind being interrupted by pirates while mining, feel free to visit the belts or resource extractions sites. That's why it's usually best to drop into a ring away from the RES's. Pirates rarely if ever show up there, but you may run across another npc miner or two. If a planet has two rings to it, the innermost ring is the A ring and the outermost ring is the B ring when checking the composition of the rings from the system map.

If you can afford it, try to get at least a 6 bin refinery, that way you can keep the 4 best metals in there and use the 2 remaining bins for the junk minerals you'll get in the asteroid chunks.

Its also a good idea before selling your hard earned work to check the bulletin board to see if there are any missions asking for the mineral/metal you may have. You'll make more from those than selling it through commodities.

It can be a tedious job when first starting out, but I believe you'll learn to fly your ship much better as you chase down all the chunks. I can fill up my 72 slot asp in about 2 hours with palladium, gold and platinum, giving me between 500,000cr to a million.
