Newcomer / Intro Need help to decide to keep my ASPX or not.

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice with regards what to do with my Asp Explorer that I use for cargo runs and missions and has an A-rated Power plant, thrusters, and FSD (no engineer mods).

At the moment, I'm working my way up to, get to Elite in trading and to get a permit for Sol. I do this by doing trading, missions, and CGs so I can get to just over a 100 Mil so that I can purchase a Python and outfit to a decent level.

My plan is to use my Python for cargo runs, missions, trading CGs, and maybe some passenger missions when 2.2 is released.

As for my ASPX I want to either outfit for mining or for exploring with a Vehicle hanger for 2 SRVs? Or is worth selling the ASPX and stick with having a single ship?

Any help is welcomed as not quite sure what to do.

Everyone has there own preference, but I like to keep a core fleet of my favourite ships. Both the Asp Explorer and the Python are in my hanger as both are great ships in their own way. So, my view would be keep the Asp and carry on working till you have the credits. (Don't forget insurance costs too) :)

I vastly prefer to keep all my ships with a few exceptions, because often I feel like flying something different and then I have a ship ready for it. And IF I ended up unable to rebuy, I wouldn't drop to sidewinder.

It is well worth keeping your AspX, both my commanders still have their AspXs and they get used a lot.

However, don't keep your Asp if it means that you are short of rebuy after buying and outfitting your next ship. Sell off/trade down the modules in the Asp and if still short of a decent cushion over your rebuy for the next ship, sell the Asp too. You can always drop into a Li Yong-Rui station in future and pick another one up with the discount.

P.S - Once you get your Python, you will want to keep that too, the ability to haul large loads to outposts makes it a real keeper.

Personally I've not used my AspX since going Python and above, I'd say sell if you need the cash but do the FSD range engineer upgrade.

AspX is a great ship tbh once you get an Anaconda, T9 or a Cutter it will make you so much credits that you can rebuy an AspX on a whim if you so choose i.e. don't be afraid to sell it for a 10% loss if you need the credits

If you need the cash from selling the Asp, you probably don't have enough funds to buy a Python.

A Python is the ship htat gets the most threads where new(ish) players complain about losing their ship. Because it is far more expensive to equip than any smaller ship and takes some practice to win combats in.

Dont sell the ASPX, keep it, it will remain useful to you for running long range missions and trading because of the high jump range (second only to the Anaconda which you'll need at least 250M to D-rate).

While the Python is a good all around ship, has a lot of internals for cargo racks, it has a very short/low FSD range and will force you to get Engineer mods and even with L5 mods it still wont reach ASPX levels of FSD range.

100M is just about enough to decently outfit (not very decent actually) the Python but after that you may not have enough credits for insurance. And you do not fly without enough insurance for several re-buys!

I suggest you keep doing what you're doing now (trading to earn credits and rank up) until you have close to 200M and then buy your Python and keep your ASPX ;)

It may be handy having two SRV's if you intend to spend months out of the Bubble. I actually bang a second SRV into my Diamondback Explorer for those deep explorations. I haven't lost an SRV yet; at least not exploring, but it may prevent disappointment in a worst case scenario.

So yeah; if you're outside Bubblespace I totally agree with that.

I'm saving for a Python and potentially using that for a long, long trip to Jacques.

My opinion; good choices there.

Product disclosure: Please make sure you have plenty of insurance.

I can only second what was said already - don't sell Asp, it's great long-range runner (mine is fitted to do Sothis runs without need to fuel scoop on the way).
Until you have few hundred millions for Anaconda (and you are ready for L-pad ship), there is not much that can beat Asp in terms of efficiency/money per hour.

This is a very good suggestion, I myself bring 4 SRVs whenever i decide to go exploring, mainly because i love driving for KMs on end on the SRV (and climb vertical cliffs too). I've never had an SRV explode on me but most of the time when i return ill have less than 20% hull on it due to rolling, tripping on rocks and maybe flying/jumping on canyons [big grin]

Fun times.

A couple of thoughts:
1) If you need the cash then you can release most of it and lose nothing by selling off the modules. If you paid full price for it you can save money by selling the ship as well and buying it in Alioth (20% discount but permit locked) or Li... power play region for a 15% discount.
2) I'd get a Clipper as a next stage trade ship as it is much cheaper than a Python and much better at running from trouble. Downside is ranking up to get it.
.
I think anyone will find a use for an Asp in the later game due to its jump range. I'm using one right now and have a fleet of ships including an Anaconda (and Clipper and Python amongst others).

Thanks for all the advice Commanders. It's quite helpful and I've decided that I work my way up to at least 200 Mil to buy and outfit my Python for trade runs, Cgs, and Missions. Then, I keep my ASPX and outfit for exploration.

Haven't unlocked the engineer yet for FSD upgrades.

Just one another question with outfitting the Python it best to go Large Beam Laser turrets and Medium Gimballed Mutli-Cannon? Or another weapon loadout?

Again thanks for the advice it has really helped to sort out my plan.

Keep it, store it. It may come in handy if you're ever broke and get blown up. It's easier to get it out of storage than to again search out the modules to outfit it. I have upwards of a dozen ships now, scattered all over. Don't want all my little eggs in one basket . . .

This isn't a very useful bit of advice in the newcomers forum.

Getting to a rank of Baron is not something that new players can do quickly any more.

I have two large gimbal beams up top, large turret burst in the nose and two medium turreted multi-cannons. Heat can be an issue so I don't use beam turrets, Python gets hot quick.

When i first bought my Python i spent about 90M on it, a few A rated stuff and mostly D. It was enough back then but now i've upgraded some to A as well with insurance costs to about 4M. Make sure you have insurance money, very important :)

As per weapon loadout, i have 2 Medium beams an 3 Large multicannons, all unmodded but planning to. So far, heat is not an issue at all with this weapon loadout (you can change one of the large MCs to another beam and that's where you start managing heat), you strip off their shields using beams and quickly shred their hull using the multicannons right after. Every once in a while i'd change the loadout depending on what i want to do, if i just want to have fun i make a missile boat, depends really. You'll have to test out different loadouts and see what you're comfy with ;)

PS. never had the chance to use turreted weapons, all gimbals. Every once in a while ill put a fixed just to practice, my aiming skills are still trash :D

She's named "Kaa". Two mine-layers (up front, topside), two big gimbal multi-cannons (in back, topside), giant gimbal beam laser (chin). I put the mine-layers in front in order to fit larger multi-cannons in back. Fully A-rated so heat is rarely/never a problem.

Personally, I prefer to buy outright & keep my previous ships. That way, if (when) the unthinkable happens I've gone back only one step & not all the way back to the sidey...
