Need help with exploration controls

I haven't played ED for well over a year. Not since they changed the way explorers go around exploring stuff and the new way of scanning. All this talk about HUD mode switching, FSS etc. etc. confuses me somewhat. When I tried playing again after the changes it seems my controls had been reset and my joystick controls had changed and so on. All those changes stopped me from wanting to play because I didn't know where to start or what to do. I managed to change my flight controls back to what they used to be, using my antiquated Microsoft Sidewinder, which is still going strong after all these years. However, what I'm in need of now is some help and instructions on how to set up and use discovery controls, FSS. What keys make everything work and how do they work please? I miss playing the game but feel somewhat daunted by the changes. Any pointers and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

(probably not in that order :) )
Thanks for that. It's a good video to give you a rough idea. Don't suppose you have a link that shows you how to program keys to do all this?

Keyboard, mouse, Atari 2600?

All the binds are in your control panel. Really it is just a matter of setting the keybinds that work best for you and being intuitive with your finger memory. The most important are mode switching (I use mouse 3), honking off the FSS (I use mouse 1), and firing off the DSS probes (I use mouse 2).

For my explore routine I fly mostly in Analysis mode (jumps, scoops, honks) and stay there as long as I've decided to map. I'll only switch out of Analysis mode to prepare for landings or if one of those NPCs that do show up way out in the black to pop up. And yes, Virginia, NPCs are real. It is easy to get lazy after 500 jumps and suddenly you receive "new contact" notices. That will make you wake up real quick like.
