Elite / Frontier Need Help With FFE, SPEED PROBLEM

Hello,
I was a fan of old elite during amiga times and now decided to have a look at FFE. One thing that completley puzzeles me is, that when i get attacked i cant change speed anymore. After take off everything works fine, during flight everything works fine, but once i get attacked i cant change speed at all. No matter if i have engines on or off, with engines on i still can set a desired speed but my actual speed doesnt change even a little bit, not even somewhere behind the comma. Same when i use engine off. I see the thrust coming from my engine but absolutely NOTHING happenes to my actual speed. This ist with all versions off FFE i donwloaded. Original one and JFFE. I searched the internet for long time but cant find anything, just one post where someone explains same problem but noone seems to recognize what he really means so no helpful answer.
Does anyone have any idea whats going on there? if its a known bug, or anything because it drives me crazy to be unable to change my speed without having the slightest clue what the reasons might be.

That is no bug. In these games you are usually getting attacked while your ships speed is displayed relative to a current star or planet. If that speed is high you will not see any changes in a short period of time, even with the large accelerations some ships have.

ok, thx, i took a sharp look at speed changes and actual speeds and now i see when im at 15 - 20000 km/s theres something happening very slowly which becomes a lot mor visible when in star dreamer mode

Remember that FFE uses Newtonian Physics - if it takes you 6 hours to get up to that speed the fastest way to slow down would be to spin your ship around and thrust your way backwards for 6 hours (the rear thrusters are typically far stronger than any others) - In combat you can safely disregard the speed listed, as the enemy ship will be going at a near-identical speed.

The safest way to combat - without jousting will be to monitor how quickly the enemy ship you're targeting is closing in or getting further. If he's closing rapidly, then slow down until the range is closing slowly. I'm sure you'll find videos on Youtube (or someone might be able to link you to one) showing what I mean here. With a bit of practice you'll be keeping to the rear end of the enemy ships with minimal fuss (and all because you're literally ignoring the speed on-screen)

thx, now i got rid of my confusion about speed, things go a lot better...when im attacked i just start slipping sideways and down or upwards, point my laser at the enemy and nail it, works good so far, cause i rarley get hit that way. Since i have 5 shields, which is enough for attacks of several small ships, and a naval ecm i feel pretty confident and mighty blowing ships left and right to pieces :D
