Newcomer / Intro Need Help with Megaship Turret Mission

I have a new mission I'm trying, to destroy the megaship turrets.
I followed the following advice I found online:

What you have to do:

  1. Use the data link scanner to scan the structure (in this case a megaship). You must be fairly close to the structure to use the data link scanner.
  2. After you do this, several sub-targets of the structure will appear such as: turrets, cargo hatches, power capacitors. Select a turret.
  3. Fly close to the turret and use the data link scanner AGAIN to scan the turret. You must be close to the turret.
  4. With the turret selected, view the contacts pane to the left. You should now see a sub-target where you would normally see a subsystem on a ship. Select the sub-system. In this case the “turret power grid”. I don’t remember the exact name.
  5. Destroy the turret’s sub-target and leave.
So I data link scan. good.
I'm supposed to attack the "turret power grid"
I find five "defense turrets 0-4". I don't see "the turret" just "a bunch of turrets" I see a "power grid" but no "turret power grid"
So i pick a turret. Scan it up close. Good. Nothing happens. i scan a "power grid" nothing happens.
I attack the power grid. Nothing happens, except a mega-load of ships come attack me.
I attack turret 0. nothing happens, except a mega-load of ships come attack me
There are 4 automated defense turrets, 1 cargo bay and 15 power capacitors.

I then tried to read around some more, and some advice talked nebulously about a recon limpet. So I bought one, but it wont lock onto anything.
After 15 hours of trying, targeting, scanning, attacking, notihng.

For “fairly close” read less than 200 metres, this can be an issue with some ships.

As I understand this you need to find and then Data Link scan all the turrets first to reveal the sub-systems for each turret, this is to save time during the actual attack which will be resisted. A way to avoid trouble such as becoming Wanted and defenders is to attack from Silent Running mode which will cause its own problems.

All but the scan range is from things I remember from elsewhere in the forums so is not necessarily right, I also recall seeing comments about bugs in some megaship missions.

Well, exact names matter - otherwise, how should we know what you are talking about? Yes, there may be multiple things around a megaship with similar names.

The turret's power generator is a subsystem of the turret - if you're not familiar yet with subsystem targetting, you'll need to get to.

1) Datalink scanner: needs to be deployed, as it is mounted on a hardpoint. That's the step I ususally forget, but if you can scan the ship, then that's not your issue.
2) Yes, megaships may have multiple turrets. There are also (better paid) missions that require you to take down 2, 3 or more turrets. If you only need to bring down one, choose one. I prefer to take one that keeps me out of the firing arc of the remainder.
3) Scan the ship, then select&scan your chosen turret with the datalink scanner, then select the generator from the subtarget menu. At this point, a couple of screenshots may be useful - one of your subtarget menu with the generator selected, the other out of your canopy with what you think is the generator.
4) Now it comes to personal preferences and weapons loadout - those turrets and generators are armoured, and they and everyone so inclined in the vincinity will start shooting back as soon as you open fire. What I found to work rather good is to use a cool, unshielded Viper Mk.III with packhound missiles and a good scanner. Retreat, with your target selected (and the packhounds locked on) until you reach the edge of your scanner range - about 2.5 km in my case. Unleash the full salvo from both launchers. My scanner range seems to be larger than the Megaship's, so they know they're attacked - they just don't know who is doing the shooting. Stick around until the missiles impact and check if that was sufficient to fulfill the mission. A couple of packhound salvos usually is, a single seeker usually isn't.

Since they haven't registered you as the offender yet (ofc, you get the bounty - but nobody was able to scan you yet), retreat back to base (preferably via an IF) and collect your money.

You need to work out where the generators are - you can scan the turret for them or just look for them. They glow blue and (some) spin - once you've seen a few you won't need to scan ever again.

And ram them. Then they won't aggro, so if you ram the wrong thing no-one will care - far easier when learning :)

Edit: The generators are usually nowhere near the turrets

Hi, thanks for the advice so far. When I scan the turrets(from 23m), no subsystem target displayed anywhere that I can see.

ok, thanks for the help. Since I'm new to bounty hunting, I'm also new to how to target a subsystem. It's just never come up. I was cycling through targets and the sub-systems were not showing up. I didn't realize I had to go to settings, targeting, and assign a keybinding to subystems. Now, I get it. Thank you!
