Horizons Need help with wake scanner

I bought a wake scanner and set it to a fire button but it doesn't work.
I target the wake then I bring up the hud that says wake scanner, press the fire button and ..... nothing.
I'm not to far away, as I drift slowly towards the wake and eventually pass it.
The left panel says "Scan needed"
The fire is set to 1 in the fire setup in righthand panel. 1 is lb on the mouse.

I believe the wake scanner is currently broken in supercruise. But works fine in normal space. Fixed in 2.2.

You also can not scan low wakes, only high wakes.

I'm not in supercruise. I read a post where a cmdr checks high wakes every time he exits a station.
I want to do the same.
Meta? Do I have to deploy hardpoints to make the wake scanner work? (But that wont work if ED allows wake scans in super cruise)

Hello, first you could try to scan near a station at low speed: hardpoints deployed, 10 seconds hitting your scan button. Isn't there the timer, needed to scan, which is not understood ? Second bad advice, you go near the Wake signal (500 meters) and stop your engines with the target just ahead of you. You must be sure you do basic things before sending a ticket to FD. I am sure you do it correctly, just hope it's ok.

If you park just outside a station then you look out of your window / ship screen the wakes will appear as a grey box. You can go to your contacts menu and select them there or pressing the select button. On your radar they appear as white icons i think.

I think you are doing it right. Remember yes to deploy your hard points and each scanner has a different range depending on specification. Generally you need to be under 2000 meters to under 4000 meters before you can scan. I suggest you change the key from number one since this is normally reserved to deploy weapons and this might be the problem. From memory its better to have the wake scanner on its own fire group. So then you can for example have it under fire group 2 then have it under 1 if you like. You will then need to press the next button to select the wave scanner before you can use it. When you are close enough press the 1 button and a blue scanner bar will appear. You need to keep holding it for at least 10 seconds for the scan to complete. You will then get a message saying what type of scan data you have obtained. You will find the completed scan data in the Inventory \ Data folder.

Hey guys, the problem was the hardpoint deployment. I didn't realize that was necessary. I see the grey box. hit T to target it and I get a half circle over it.
Then pressing MB 1 it scans. depending on the distance.
Not Funny! The second successful scan made my jump follow the NPC who high-jumped. And it was the opposite direction to my real target. Not funny at all!

I am not sure what is going on now.

The first part is right you are now scanning correctly by the look of it.

I am not sure what is making you jump. Are you sure you did not press the J or frame shift drive key by mistake?

There is equipment called a Frameshift Drive Interdictor, i hope this is not installed? This will cause you to follow a ship.

The Wake scanners are tools made to help you follow a target, say you are a bounty hunter or a pirate, and you want to chase a pilot, you scan the wake, it tells you where they went, you can then jump to that system (as long as your FSD can go the distance) you simply need to jump while targeting the wake & BAM! They also are now used to collect data for engineers.

@ DragonIan The Frameshift interdictor is a different tool for forcing a pilot out of super cruise and back into normal space.

I find it helpful to have both items equipped for bounty hunting jobs & pirating trading vessels for their yummy engineer components.

What I did: I was targeting my system target, but did a high wake scan. I pointed at the yellow system target but I jumped to the wake scan target.
It seems strange, but you have to realize that having a system target wont make it un-target if you target a wake scan or a nave beacon.
This happens a lot. And it may be a bug, a glitch or the way it wants to be.

When you successfully scan a High Wake, your FSD will then be targeted at the system the High Wake went to, so always check your jump target before engaging FSD, as you can end up like what happened and off course.

Obviously if jump is impossible for your ship it will whinge about not enough fuel.

As a new player i found this a mind bender lol

Ine the end i fugured out go to your navigation acreen high wakes will show up there, select one ....then you can scan it.

I know experienced players may find this ridiculous but there is a hell of a lot to take on board in this game...newish players like myself still struggle to just figure out the right menu to be on lol.

And i have come from years of ark which has its own brutal learning curve 😁
