Need mining help

Hey guys,
newbie here :)
I just managed to get myself a lakon type 6 and decided to kit it up for mining and hauling. Up until now I've just been hauling, bulletin board stuff and rare commodities. So I wanted to give something else a try.

I'm currently sitting in METAL RICH planetary ring, "pristine reserves" and I've tried about 20 rocks and so far all I've found is Uraninite and Lepidolite. How do I find the valuable metals that make mining worth doing?

thanks

You will want to look for Metalic rings rather than Metal rich in order to find the best minerals.

After you've found them don't bother with anything less than Silver and beware that if you find an asteroid that yields fragments of less than 4% it may not give you a whole ton.

You can have a look at my mining system if you want, it's called Hai Ho. The sun is a red dwarf (Hai Ho, Hai Ho it's off to work we go! :D ) so the rings are quite dark and dangerous and there are quite a few pirates but if you survive its quite a good system.

The nice thing is it's got a station (Federal) and good resources so you don't have to travel.

It seems to me that when they "fixed" the rock exploit by making the mineral content random they may have gone too far. Now it seems that the whole of a ring (I am in a pristine metallic ring) has random amounts. What this means is that when you log in you may just get low amounts eg 4-7%, and the next time you log in you might get high amounts eg 30-70%.
I haven't tried any other rings or clusters yet, but I wonder has anybody else noticed this?

It should be more consistent, ie a pristine metallic ring/cluster should always have a higher amount of silver, gold, palladium and platinum.

How can you tell the cluster type and quality?

Galaxy view, select star system data, click on astroid field or planet (for rings). Info panel on left will show type and quality. It won't give you a granular breakdown of metal ratios, yields, etc... But if you see "Pristine" and "metallic" it's time to get paid.

The asteroid ring type is listed in the System Map as either Ice, Metal Rich or Metallic.
The quality of the rings or how much they have been mined is also listed such as "prisitine, major, common and low". There may be others I have not seen.

Congrats on your type 6. I love mine. Be careful mining in it though. I tried to mine with mine, had a 5 bay refinery, operations were lovely. But the pirates kept scanning and trying to jack me for my loot, so I had to bail from the field and return later. It got so bad, I couldn't get more than 20 tons in my cargo hold before being forced to bail. I guess a flying bus with 20tons of gold, platinum and palladium is just to hard to pass up.

Thanks folks,
I'll go find a system with Metalic rings rather than metal. Might go check out Hai ho :)

What at does the percentage of the mineral corrispond to? Is it percentage to make up one ton? So you need to build up 100% to refine one ton. So the higher the better?

Correctomundo!

What you'll also find is that one rock piece may have 2 metals in it as well. Having multibay refineries greatly increases your mining efficiency.

If you stay away from the extraction areas you usually won't see any.

No extraction point. Found it in a system. The first day I was lonely. the very next, more and more pirates began showing up.

This got changed late gamma. Pirates and System Authority turn up from time to time now, wherever you're dropped in the ring.

I like it personally, take an Asp and mine with that, additional cash from bounties thanks very much :D

Hmmmm. I'm not sure mining is really for me. Been at it for about 4 hours now and have 9 tons of random stuff in my cargo hold. Seems to take forever to find something worth picking up. The best I've found was 30% silver. Otherwise it was just 6% platinum etc. I just can't see a good profit in in when compared to cargo hauling. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow. I think my lakon type 6 might be a bit overkill for it though. There's no way I'm ever going to fill that hold XD

Yeah, "metal rich" really... aren't. It has to be metallic, there you'll find at the very least bertrandite and silver, and usually some gold, platinum and other rare metals sprinkled among them.

My expectations got a bit skewed, though, because the VERY FIRST rock I mined was a 40% platinum - that alone was enough to upgrade to a Hauler for the next run :).

Do you go for the sites or the ring around set locations? I found the dark in HH to be a detriment as I could barely see the various roids. I am hoping to find a ring that has good roids in a decent system, or conversely a belt that draws in pirates endlessly so I can farm those. Thanks in advance.
