Need MOAR gameplay variety (pretty please, with sugar on top!)

Simply by accident, I checked in on the forums today - been off the game for a while. Was excited to see that 2.3 releases today, and while I probably won't take advantage of the multi-crew features, I'll certainly create an avatar and spend money on nameplates. I've invested ungodly sums of money into this game (full HOTAS, flight sim chair, Oculus CV1 etc.) and am in it for the long haul.

BUT... I already know what'll happen. I'll enjoy the avatar creator and spend a couple of hours admiring my new character and the tweaks to my ship's visuals. I may even seek out one or two of the new bits of eye candy - megaships or new stations. But that'll probably be it. Why? No new gameplay to speak of - most of the new stuff cannot really be interacted with; just floating objects in space. The universe is huge and has SO much potential, but there needs to be more to the game than shooting fish in a barrel, trading for credits, or simply flying around and looking at stuff. Truly interesting and well-written missions (not just the randomly created ones that are basically all variations from each other), the ability to raid pirate basis or liberate prisoners from megaships, more interactive NPCs, planets with atmospheres (to make exploring interesting). That sort of thing.

Don't get me wrong: I'm a big fan of ED and FD. I just wish there was more focus on evolving the gameplay vs. introducing new incremental features. I've sunk countless hours into the game (it is GOOD, at its core), and I hope that I'll want to double and triple that down the road. As a show of support I'll buy most of the nameplates - but I probably won't get much use out of them. I consider them an investment in "what could be". FD: please realize the potential of this awesome foundation, and focus on evolving the gameplay. In the meantime: congrats on 2.3. From the forum and Reddit I gather many are very excited. Thanks!!

The game is being build while we're in it.
More stuff will come.
But it takes time.

Everybody has his personal wish list.
I made at least 50 proposals filled with all kinds of ultra cool ideas :).
I only do that with games I love and that speak to my imagination.

Remember to buy your ship name and ID plate!

Done! I did spend about 30 bucks on customization. Created an avatar, threw some names on a couple of ships and am now back to other games. 2.3 held my interest for about an hour - which sounds harsh, but is unfortunately true. I wish I was new to ED - those were exciting times indeed. So much to learn and see. But for now, other games await. I'll cross my fingers for more gameplay content down the road. Have fun chaps!

Your doing it wrong..... your suppose to fill in the game-play/content gaps with your imagination.

He's right, your supposed to pretend the ED galaxy is a plain piece of paper and your ship is the pen, now create your own content.

You paid £30 for a piece of paper and a pen, may as well use it.

Co-op'ing the exact same content is not the same as new content. It's just a marginally different way of doing the same stuff. Need more "stuff" to do, and a more "alive" universe, not more ways of going after that same content.
The analogy to me is that FD has designed a beautiful car with an awesome engine, a cool interior and lots of electronic gadgetry. And then they've given us a big, largely empty world to drive it in. The world is like a GTA city minus the diverse buildings, landscape, people and other drivers milling about. It's like driving around in a large car park. An attractive car park, but a car park nonetheless. The patches focus on adding more features to the car, but they don't move us out of the car park into the surrounding areas filled with life. That's what ED ultimately needs, IMO.

Now, I'm not sure how long you've been playing. But if you're reasonably new, then ED is probably still very exciting. It was exciting to me for quite some time, over the first couple of years (years!). But if it's longevity FD is seeking, I do believe a fundamental shift in development strategy is needed.
