Guide / Tutorial Need more clarification on Engineers

I'm looking to start completing engineers but I'm exasperated by how much materials you need to improve abilities. The biggest thing I need to know is how are these engineer upgrades applied?
  • Are they only applied to the ship you're currently in?
  • If I wanted to apply engineering upgrades to another ship, do I have to be at the engineers home base to apply the upgrades or can I be at any other station to apply upgrades?
  • Do I have to recollect resources to apply upgrades to other ships or is it once the upgrade is unlocked, I can apply it to other ships.
  • How do I find more engineers, I only found 5 but I believe there are more.
  • Do engineered modules stack? I saw some engineers are able to engineer the same module.
I want to engineer my Corvette since now NPCs have access to engineered modules and I'm tired of not being able to last long in combat zones. I'm using an ASP Explorer for traveling since it has the longest jump range but obviously I want to be able to engineer other ships, I'm just not sure how to go about collecting resources so they can be applied to ships that I'm not currently traveling in. Any other tips with dealing with engineers would be welcomed, too. Thanks.

I am not an expert but I will do my best to answer your questions
Yes you can only apply it to equipment on your ship, but that equipment can be moved to another ship later.
You can pin 1 blueprint from each engineer, allowing you to use it whilst not visiting an engineer via the workshop on most stations.
You need to have resouces for each upgrade
There are many engineers. Inara https://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers can help. Click on their picutre and it will tell you what you need to do to unlock each engineer and what each engineer needs.

You do need to "level up" each engineer, which you can only do at their station although I found that by fully upgrading a couple modules that I maxed them out fairly quickly (getting to level 3.5 with an engineer will allow you to "hear" about another engineer (they will be added to the engineer codex).
Experimental effects can only be done at an engineer.

As I said I am not an expert and I am sure other more experienced players could give you better info, but hopefully this will get you started.

Yes, upgrades performed by engineers are applied to the ship you’re in.

To engineer other ships you either have to bring that other shipbto said engineer(s) or pin the blueprint so you can apply it remotely. Note that you can only pin one blueprint at a time. Pinning is useful for something like applying the same mod to a bunch of your ships, so kinda like bringing the specific mod to those ships versus bringing the ship to the engineer

In order to unlock higher grades (or levels) of a mod, you need to unlock access to higher grades by performing lower mods. Also when you engineer your specific module the materials you use to do so are indeed consumed so if you want to apply same mod to another ship for example, you’ll need to re-collect those materials.

You usually gain invitations or learn about new engineers after completing a certain amount of upgrades from the engineers you know. There’s other ways and other engineers as well, you can get the majority of info from Inara at https://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers/

Just to be a bit clear, engineering is applied to a module. Special effects can only be applied at an engineer. No, blueprints do not stack (that would be utterly overpowered).

Are they only applied to the ship you're currently in?
They're only applied to the specific module that is installed in the ship you are currently in, but they stay applied to that module. So you can move that engineered power distributor (e.g.) to storage and to another ship, but it keeps its engineering status
If I wanted to apply engineering upgrades to another ship, do I have to be at the engineers home base to apply the upgrades or can I be at any other station to apply upgrades?
Yes.
Ok:
  • any arbitrary engineering (which that engineer provides) you need to be at that engineer's base
  • any secondary effects, you need to be at the base
  • engineering from a pinned blueprint (one pinned blueprint per engineer) you can do at most stations anywhere in the Galaxy
Do I have to recollect resources to apply upgrades to other ships or is it once the upgrade is unlocked, I can apply it to other ships.
Upgrades always are applied to a single module. You can swap this module between ships, but the resources are consumed in the upgrade. Upgrade another module, and you'll need more resources.
How do I find more engineers, I only found 5 but I believe there are more.
In game: wait. As you progress in the level with these five engineers, they will reveal the other engineers to you.
Out of the game: Inara. Won't help you that much, as they are only unlocked once you've reached a certain level with the previous tier. If you try to land at any of their bases without an invitation, you'll be shot at.
Do engineered modules stack? I saw some engineers are able to engineer the same module.
No. Only one modification and one special effect per module. If you apply a second modification (or special effect), the first one is lost.
