Need more help I don't have a smeging scooby what is going on!!

So I'm looking for some "Structural regulators" for a mission, was told to search USSs and wasted time in space until I realised it was a planet based mission (when I though Planet USSs were called POIs?). on the planet I see "Investigate crash site markers that move as I get close, So I search a crash site and nadda, then I can't find any more so I quit out for a bit.

Go back in after some grub and I suss out that the early "investigate crash site" markers no longer exits and I search POIs. Found a ship with a data port (or something, can't scan it press the data scanner button on my pad (double then triple checked the binding) nada, pick up some cannisters of Fish and move on, find more POIs but bases and not crash sites, shoot one up (luckily criminal skimmers yay 4k in bounties), land try to connect to data point, nada yet again. double and triuple check binding yup STILL the same.....

So I'm peeved off with this mission, it's about as much fun as looking for a needle in a SMEG haystack. How the hell do I find the right POI is it completely random? How the hell do I scan data from things on a planet??

If I had any hair it would al be gone and my wife is concerned with the drool down my chin.....I'm going crazy here!

Yeah pretty sure I've seen these in Planet POIs where I've been killing skimmers for Mission Board missions. Basically land in a POI, deploy SRV and use the wave scanner to look for "Technology" wave pattern. Tech is in the top end of the band. Follow the scanner, if necessary kill and defenders and then check Contacts for what you are looking for and scoop it.

If you are not familiar with how the Wave Scanner works check out this site to get the idea:

http://www.wavescanner.net/

Note, it works like a spectrometer, not a radar. Every item has a signature of lines from top to bottom. Bottom end is minerals top end is man-made. The signal starts out wide spread across the whole scanner and narrows as you get closer. Follow even faint signals that have a top signature as they will resolve as you get closer.

Thanks to the latest update if this is a mission quest it it really easy now, when you enter the system you need to salvage them from either, honk a discovery scanner or scan the nav beacon (if you don't have a scanner) then it should give you the location of the planet you need to go to, head over to it and a search site will appear on your contacts, fly to it and it will then start updating co-ordinates follow it until you find the site! :)

Here is a video obsidian ant did on it for visual representation: https://youtu.be/Rtp6ohnnTPU

Hope this helps :)

yup I've been finding crash sites just not the ones I'm looking for <hand wave>, I've got some fish...... I really want to know why can't I scan data points?? The manual is sod all use.

So I did have to keep following the waypoints? I don't have them now do I have to exit the instance and go back to reset (something someone suggested in another thread I did) cheers for the vid!

But how do I scan data points!!!!!!

Check your SRV fire group settings - have had to redo mine a few times since 2.1 - it tends to muck them up and you get no scanner.

gawd do I have to do that as well?.....off to game. Many thanks for the heads up

When I do these missions I stop at the nav beacon to scan it (go near it and your onboard computer will scan it). Then it will point to me exactly where the crash site is for the cargo to retrieve (it will update your mission log with it). Land near it and scoop it in the SRV. Took me a while to remember to scan the nav beacon and I was scanning planets randomly before, took a lot of time.

I have to Salvage them from a planet. I am really deeply disapointed with all this my first attempt at a planet based mission, it's just so random and awful. And I STILL can't scan data points with my SRV. :(
I tend not to have any issue with finding stuff on planets, but then I'm stubborn, lmao, so I don't think I can help here apart from flying up to 2km, finding a blue marker on the radar, landing inside it and then pootling around in the SRV until it's found. :<
Regarding scanning, it should be your secondary fire. Face a DP, target it (hotkey default: T), hold down your alt fire (right-mouse-button I think).

Those mission are not really random if you scan the nav beacon, it tells you exactly where to land. There will be a crashed ship/srv, some debris, a few cargo pods and one (or the number needed) of them will be the mission cargo. It will be hard to find if you just go planet to planet honking, that's why scanning the nav beacons helps.

Noted for future reference, thanks. :)

Yup I did all that, got to the planet, had "investigate crash site" which kept on moving (I should have kept on following these "waypoints" but I had no idea what they were until It was too late and I'd stopped to expolre a crash site (Not the right one) and then the waypoints stopped and all the subsequent crash site yeilded no mission needed items.

I sussed the Datapoint scanning, it wasn't setup in firegroups....quite why that is needed when I could assign separate controls in the bindings sections I'll never know, very unintuitive from FD there. (oh and NO mention of that in the manual section on data scanning either)

what the key bindings section should have is NOT specifics of the button, i.e. weapons and scanner, but fire 1 and 2.....then it would have been obvious to check fire groups...like the ship controls

well I quit the mission and I'll take what I learnt from here and from trial and error to when I do the next one. A little bit more mission info would be nice (like explaining the waypoint system, I just thought it was the various crash sites I had to explore).

I had this issue where i couldn't find what i needed from the crash site. I think it may have been a bug as i subsequently noticed i didn't meet the rank on one of the mission criteria yet it still let me take it. Worth a check to see if yours is the same.

, it was "mostly harmless" and I'm Competent
I defo had the rank

edit does anyone know why after the first auto save it does the above it shove what I'm typing up a line, I usually edit it out but it's so irritating!

I thought the fire groups would be part of it - nearly got me killed in a base that respawned on me while i was mashing keys trying to get scanner to activate - very silly it being both there and in key settings.

well the control config for the ship weapons are:

Primary Fire
Secondary Fire

So it's obvious that's generic and used for fire groups

SRV weapons are:
Fire SRV Weapon
Operate datalink scanner

Very specific and you would presume that's how it works, but it's like the ship a generic primary and secondary fire that then needs to be setup in a fire group FD need to sort that out it's confusing IMO.
