This isn't a name suggestion thread, as I don't consider what I'm calling these boats as true names.

But... I'm trying to think of military style designations for my combat craft. I have one, with another coming soon.

My fighter, a Viper Mk III, I would like to designate "EES INT-001". This stands for "Equus Extraction Solutions Interceptor #001"

I also plan on building a ground attack gunship out of a Diamondback Explorer, designated "EES GSP-OO1". This stands for "Equus Extraction Solutions Gunship #001"

What are your thoughts on my military designations?

Regards, Alicorn.

Military designations, eh? 'Bout the closest I got was a ship named the HMS Defiance. It was a very defiant ship. I made a fake designation for my old pilot's license out of a plethora of different things all mashed together into one meaning. The only thing I've got off the top of my head, is my old security designation. 152. (one five two) That was my number when I worked security.

I went with more of a secret project military designation.

HFS = Hudson Fleet Ship (my last name, not from PP)

Then the name of each ship is taken from Greek Mythology.

HFS Ares is my main combat ship. Ares was the god of war.

HFS Hephaestus is my mining ship. Hephaestus was the god of Blacksmithing and what not.

HFS Apollo is my exploration ship. Apollo was the god of knowledge among many other things.

I think I am confused a bit for what you are going for, but let me try my hand.

Military designations for aircraft (U.S. anyway) Are a letter number combo. For instance FA-18's are (F)ighter (A)ttack model (18). Or there is a P-3 which are (P)atrol model 3. But then there are variations such as EA-18, (E)lectronic (A)ttack model 18. I think the EA-18's are actually FA-18E or FA-18F framing, and that E or F at the end would signify a hardware change of some sort from the previous model, but as the EA-18 is the first of its kind, it doesn't warrant the E or F designation at the end. If they make a significant change, the next model would be an EA-18B, and the original would be an EA-18A.

So, what I would suggest is drop the EES, and just roll with mission role like you have after (INT, GSP, etc...) and then do the number designations based on modules installed? For example, if we have a Cobra that is designated INT-1 and it has an interdictor attached, but loaded with limpets and pirate equipment, maybe then a Cobra with an interdictor loaded for pure combat becomes the INT-1B?

I think what I would do is to number all models of ships and make them the number designations. Adder -1, Anaconda -2, AspE -3, and so on... Then, based on role I want them to perform give them a letter designation on the front side. For example, an Anaconda built for exploration could be a P-2 (p = patrol), but that same ship with maybe a landing module/rover hanger installed I would designate a P-2B as I have a new module installed. Or maybe add another mission identifier letter to the front? Maybe GP-2, or similar... Then, if I have an Anaconda loaded for trading it would be a C-2. Anaconda loaded for combat maybe an A-2 or F-2. Maybe if I loaded a fighter model up with all rails I would go A-2B or F-2B...

Did that help? Any? Or did I just muddy the waters further? Havne't been sleeping well as of late :D

All input is being noted. I'll review the thread later this evening & update my Inara fleet then. :)

Well my ships have had a designation since before I began playing Elite: CIV-MIL-X7 Xenokaze, translates to "Civilian - Military - X7 Xenokaze" (X7 referring to the guild I've yet to form IRL, likely never will either).

Assuming I ever decide to get off my rear I'll build my airship IRL and that's going to be her designation and name. --Momentai :3

I call my Vulture The DSCV Vengence (Deep Space Combat Vessel)

Named it back during the first big Eravate Fiasco, figured Vengence is a fitting name for it :)

You've piqued my interest. Airship? IRL? What are you saying?

I'm thinking Ultra-lights. You don't need as much training (if any, I'm not too sure) to fly them. My neighbor has one and it's an awesome little thing. You can build them yourself if you get a kit

Interesting...

I may be misunderstanding this thread but as per Elite lore, the federal ships are FNV and imperial are INV for "*** Navy Vessel".

For example, I call my Anaconda the INV Infernus.

So, quick question, does Hudson undermine Hudson? Or is Hudson with Hudson?

Is Imp censored??

Doesn't look like it. Think he was just using it like X in math equations.

On topic, I'm partial to your current idea for the most part, but I'd personally have a specific call sign for each ship instead of a serial number at the end. Just me though.

I was pledged to Hudson from GPP release day until Saturday. I'm now with the Empire to try to get a Clipper and get a Prismatic on my Corvette. I'll probably go independent once that's accomplished

No, like, Federation Navy Vessel and Imperial Navy Vessel- I just didn't want to write them both out because I'm lazy.

Irony!

Personally, I think of it like this
An aircraft or ship/boat/vessel have a model number, a serial number, and a call sign/nickname.
Example: a Spitfire Mk. VII, ABCXYZ, "Something Cleverly British".
Is it the serial number type of thing that you are going for?

call signs tend to be for the crew rather than the vehicle which are only designated by a serial or fleet number that way the call sign lives on if unit is out of commission , ships tend to have nicknames ie HMS Illustrious was nicknamed the Lusty only a few cavalry units named/nicked named their tanks (it's a donkey walloper thing)

Yes an airship IRL, she's basically going to be a solar powered Zeppelin of sorts with a design loosely based on a solar sailing ship named the Odette II from an anime I love.

This is the closest thing to a blue print I can show you since I keep my designs in my head (what I mean is I suck at putting them on paper). So imagine the ship in the following image but with a much simpler, primitive design.

That said I've yet to decide whether or not I should attempt to build her at all, even so if you're ever on Xbox I can try to explain my design for the most part. --Momentai :3

That's a lot cooler than what I thought you were building! Good on you man.
