I'm trying to fit out a ship that can do these missions, specifically a ship that can strip shields, then damage internals so I can extract the hostages/stolen goods/not-so-stolen goods before I destroy the target ship completely.
I went with a Dolphin, small but with plenty of internals so enough for hatch breakers and collector limpets. It only has two small hardpoints, but even so I can take down the shields of an NPC T9 with a G5 efficient beam, but when I turn to the other hardpoint it seems to do nothing to whatever component I'm targeting.
I've tried dumb fire missiles with Penetrator Munitions and cannons with sturdy mount or High Yield Shell but no matter how many hits I get on weapons or engines I always seem to do much more damage to the hull than to the module I'm targeting... well not so much with the HYS, they don't seem to do damage to *anything*.
So to all the pirates out there (who target NPCs and can't just rely on threat and menace), what is your secret?
What am I missing? How do you disable a ship without destroying it?
