Newcomer / Intro Need some advice

Hi all.
I'm new to ED and need some advice on which component to upgrade on my Rig first.. I can only afford one right now but not sure which would gain the most from.. Here are my specs:
Windows 7 Professional
AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 560 Processor, 3576 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX
12.0 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti - 1.00 GB
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250G SATA Disk Device

I really appreciate any help.
Thanks!!

Maybe it would help if you could elaborate. Have you tried playing ED yet? Is it choppy in certain parts?

My graphics card is a little worse than yours, and I play 1080p ok. Slows down a bit around the mailslot, but it does not bother me.
I have a Intel i5, so that might be a bit faster, but yours sounds ok, too.

When do you have slow downs, and what resolution do you want to play?

IMHO the CPU is lagging worse - upgrade to something like FX6300 or FX6350 might give more benefit vs. cost.
As for GPU, I'd be looking at something like GTX 960.

Yes I've been running around solo and I'm playing at 1080p.. I have the graphic settings pretty high and my FPS is running at 20-60 with expected chop in some areas (frame shift jumps etc) but the quality just looks doesn't look that great... Kind of hard to explain but the FPS isn't that bad at higher settings but the outlines on items are flashing and there is a fog like appearance to everything. Also on my radar the contacts bounce around like crazy. I'm not sure if this makes any kind of sense but I have updated all drivers, bios, everything and still looks crappy. Thought my vid card was going bad but I ran 3D Mark and the graphics looked pretty good though FPS wasn't that great.

RANT WARNING - Would it hurt too much to make the title of this thread "need some advice upgrading computer components" instead of just "need some advice"? I'm tired of having to click a thread just to find out what the topic is. As far as any advice I can give for this topic, I would just upgrade the video card. If that does not make sense for any reason then would replace the whole board and CPU and video card.

Upgrade the CPU first. Turning up all the bells and whistles from graphics perspective is not exceedingly necessary to enjoy the game.

CPU

Look for a upgrade compatible with your MB (AM3+ motherboard).. I have no idea about your budget ... but I found a deal on the internets for a

AMD FX 8320E 3.2GHz Black Edition Socket AM3+ 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

for £95.66 inc VAT

The GPU is OK and you can tweak performance by just reducing the levels from Ultra down to Med quite simply.... If you have extra cash... AMD are releasing the new 390 series soon and good deals on R9 290's are starting to appear... I picked one up for my rig recently for sub £240. It drives 3 screens easily and Elite D @ Ultra settings without breaking sweat. 285's and 280's are just as good and lower priced for effective, cheap upgrades.

As far as the graphics card goes, FWIW, I have a Radeon 7950 which is 3+ years old, and I am able to run
a 33" display at 1440p just fine.

First off Thanks for all the advice!! I think I'm gonna grab the CPU first.. And I am sorry about the topic.. was kind of in a hurry this morning but I appreciate the heads-up.
I'll let you all know how it turns out. Hopefully getting this weekend!!
Thanks again!!

Has anyone run the game with all settings maxed out, including maximum Anti aliasing, or however it's spelled?
Define "maxed out".

I run E: D with Ultra settings, 64 degrees FOV & FXAA enabled @ 1920x1080 - nice & smooth v-synced & triple buffered 60 FPS all around. Tried also with MLAAx4 & SMAA, didn't notice any improvement in image quality, and no degrading of performance. Quite many run the game with much higher resolutions.

Supersamplig is a (FPS) killer though, I keep it at 1.0x.

Supersampling will kill your FPS though.

Generally speaking, the advice on this thread is sound. The 560 won't push ultra on many modern games, but Elite is rather light on resources, and provides a good immersive experience on older hardware if you turn off a few of the bells and whistles.

I'd be inclined to upgrade the processor first. Then decide on what you consider to be a desirable FPS (60 or as close to it as you can achieve is a good starting point), and reduce settings till you exceed it. You can then do minor tweaks to get it stable.

Be aware that stations are much more graphically demanding than space, so you might want to consider how important a fluid 60fps in stations really is for you.

That is probably the best choice, your GPU seems fine for now.
The good thing about this forum is that people do not barge in immediately and say "search this" and "google that". It is a newcomer's forum, and while it is true that there are stickies for a lot of topics, no one *needs* to look at or answer your post.
