Mine a pristine metallic ring.

Best thing to do is mine all your good metallics first. Then, start pulling mining missions from a few high population high tech systems, because you can complete them instantly.

You cannot buy Platinum at any commodity market.
You can only (legitimately) acquire it from mining metallic rings, same as Osmium and Painite.
(Yes, I know you can get Painite from certain NPCs. I said legitimately)

Now, you can go visit this thread here which has a list of systems with pristine metallic rings.

To go mining you will need a mining laser, a refinery and cargo space. A Collector Limpet controller and limpets helps pick up the fragments faster and easier than cargo scooping.

The important thing to remember is the PRISTINE part of the description. Common or depleted reserves don't give anywhere near as much good material.
Pristine metallic rings.

Platinum, Osmium, and Painite are gathered from mining.

BTW: the Platinum missions seemed to have replaced the Palladium missions, where you could buy a load of Palladium and then load up on missions and make millions in a matter of minutes.

Platinum is only found in High intensity resource extraction sites, but there is a trick in finding it. Do not go into the middle of the site like most as pirates will your ass. What you can do is fly to a site and drop in just before the HIRES and start mining. knock chips off until you find something ood and mine it. you should be OK and have very very few pirates bothering you. Shame its going to take too many hours to make money.

Actually, that's not true. The planet I'm currently mining at doesn't have any RES points at it, and I'm finding plenty of Platinum. Are you mining at Pristine Metallic rings? Or common planets?

What ships are best for mining?

I currently only have a Cobra MkIII and about 1mill credits, and I have many missions appear in Altair for platinum and such, but being new I have no idea.

Platinum is PLENTIFUL in pristine metallic ring systems, as has been previously stated. I rarely finish mining without 7-10 tons of the stuff in my hold. You shouldn't have to visit a RES to find it.

A Cobra makes a fine mining ship, especially since you've only got 1 mil. credits. You can outfit it to have D2 mining lasers while still keeping other weapons on the other set of hardpoints. Just outfit it with a decent refinery bin that gives you preferably 3-4 bins to work with, as much cargo space as you can hold (you can either go to a smaller class shield to get more cargo room or even go shield-less when you're mining, it's not the worst thing ever as some would have you to believe), and pickup some collector limpets as well. Once you learn how to use those things (they're finicky) then mining can be very profitable early on. You can make a lot of money by bringing the cargo bay full of materials and then traveling to a couple High Tech systems (they seem to offer a lot of mining missions that pay out 100k+ for just 1-2 tons of rare metals) and you can play the market a bit and then sell what you can't get rid of via missions.
