Needed tweeks

Hi all,
I'm new to Elite: D, I got tired of waiting for No man's Sky to come out and after a quick google search I found myself losing hours just trying to get the basics down. While now I am pretty efficient, the learning curve for almost everything was steep. I now find myself wishing for a few things hopefully most of these have been thought of and there's a plan in place to fix a few things.

So on to my wish list:
1. the ships sensor display is awful, its like something out of the 1970's, come on guys, it could be way better.
2. Auto-pilot, when traversing intra-system, it would be nice to set an auto-pilot sometimes, i've had to supercruise for periods up to 10 mins... no fun. it would also be handy to have a quick key that cycles you through planetary bodies kinda like to G button does for ships.
3. Docking assist, while docking isn't all that difficult, I have however on a few occasions not been able to find my docking pad.
4. quick keys for the Galaxy map and system maps would be nice, also I think those maps could do a better job at getting you more useful information and just plain more information,

I know I have more but this was off the top of my head at work, please feel free to correct me on anything I have wrong, I think I have a total of 15 hours of gameplay so...

Point 1, historical (from the original Elite, 1984), and it works well when you understand it.

Point 2, never likely to happen.

Point 3, when you enter a major station the compass then changes to indicate the location of your landing pad. When you get a large ship, the Standard Docking Computer can be a worthwhile investment.

Point 4, not sure if it is possible to bind keys to maps.

1 - Elite origins
2 - would take away a large chunk of the game
3 - docking computers already exist
4 - does it really take a long time to press 1, left, space?

Agree on all except point one, just because it was like that 30 years ago doesn't mean it is good and that is no reason not to update it.

It's simple and has a good visibility. What you don't like about it? How better?

No going to happen. You need to have control over your ship in SC - you could be interdicted, you may need to interdict someone, looking for unknown signals, exploring, etc., and for the sake of whole flight simulation process.

Try docking computer module.

Look in keybindings

3. Check nav-ball for blue dot (nav ball is the thingy to the left of the 'radar'). It shows you where the pad is, just as when you are preparing to jump to hyperspace / navigating in supercruise. Outside the station it will only direct you to the station, inside it will show you where the pad is.

4. system map and galaxy map are both bindable. check options, controls - bind them.

OK, point 1, the sensors system. When you understand it, you will see it is a very elegant and simple way of presenting you with a lot of data, and yet (barring when there are a lot of items in sensor range) it is not overwhelming you with clutter. This (I hope) explains it without being patronising (colours will be as default), and is when in normal space.

1, You can tell if the vessel is piloted by a Commander (hollow icon) or an NPC (solid icon).
2, You can see if it has hard-points deployed (triangular icon) or retracted (square icon). OK, not what is deployed (scanner or weaponry), but that something IS deployed.
3, You can tell where vessels are in relationship to your vessel (which is at the centre of the sensor circle). A vertical line with an icon at the top means it is above you, icon at the bottom means it is below you. If it is to the right of the sensor circle, obviously it is to your right (and if it is behind the centre, it is behind you). The V is your field of view.
4, By the use of colours it is possible to determine what something is, or its' status. A white object is either a frame wake, a cargo canister, or a missile. An orange icon means that it has not yet been scanned (either by you, or a wingman, or an ally), or it is neutral. Green is an ally, blue is for wingmen, red is for hostile, and purple is a hostile ship targeted by a wingman.

I do not know if there are others, but, as you can see, it is a lot of information being passed to you, and when you get a handle on it, it makes a lot of sense. Realistically I cannot think of a better way to do this, although I am probably biased, as I have played the original Elite and all of the sequels (to the best of my knowledge).

Welcome.

A few things you need to know, things that I wished I know when I was just starting to play:

- People love Supercruise. Seriously, the players asked for it when ED was in development. Don't bother complaining about it or giving better ideas, or pointing it's problems. Nobody listens.

- Elite pays homage to its tradition in many ways and destroys its legacy in many others. Many people will argue that both attitudes are commendable. I'm not kidding.

- After 200 hours, I'm back at waiting for NMS and SC. I'll see you back here later.

Very superficial and inaccurate description.

Players did not ask for Supercruise. FD initially proposed micro jumps everywhere aka rooms in space. The DDF rejected the idea because it failed to give the required sense of scale and 'go anywhere'. FD then proposed supercruise which is, IMHO and in the opinion of most DDF members, a far better idea, and gives an additional area where stuff can happen. The details of the implementation of supercruise was FDs alone with no feedback: I certainly think they could have done some things better. FD do listen to comments about supercruise, but, obviously, not the 'supercruise sucks' type of comment. They have said that they intend to eventually get around to doing intra-system jumps to secondary stars, no ETA, however.

10 minutes in supercruise: Pah! You have obviously not gone to Hutton Orbital at Alpha Centauri.
