Neil deGrasse Tyson Presents: Space Odyssey - The Video Game

That seems highly irrational.

Looks like my kind of game. I'm a bit sceptical about the funding goal and the estimated delivery date (one year from now) though.

Looks like the next new space game scam.

*does not talk about actual gameplay, no game loop at all
*Asking for too little money to make the game
*talks about dreaming of the perfect space game
*Promo video has clips from other games (including Star Citizen 1:20 sec in)
*Zero game programmers on staff.
*not enough time to actually make a game (even if they had any idea what game they were going to make)
*Filled with buzzwords instead of real info
*Neil deGrasse Tyson is more interesting in his new modeling carrier than showing any type of game.

But in all seriousness, I want to see this succeed and be good. As much as I love ED and the scientific elements the form parts of the groundwork, I'd also like to see something like this for the kids and...

...looks at pledge perks:

...In game currency?

IN GAME CURRENCY????

[mad]

Looks interesting. Also looks like there is money coming from other un-named sources perhaps.. But I'm o.k. with that, or indeed, paying for in-game perks after release.
If the game builds into what they say, then I'll be buying.
But backing... I'll wait to see a little first.

I've got to agree. This sounds like an idea about a concept of a possible project.
Another game that will do it all but we don't know what it will do yet.

I am pretty sure that this:
The funding via our Kickstarter campaign will likely not cover the financial requirements to develop Space Odyssey. The team behind Space Odyssey initiated the conceptualization process of the game through self-funding, then sought outside funding that's earmarked towards development.
The funds received via your support on Kickstarter will grant us the ability to have this community play the game and engage with it while the final build is underway.
As the Kickstarter gaming community begins to beta test game-play and provide feedback, we can begin to use the funds raised via Kickstarter to incorporate your modding, mapping and building suggestions, together building the awesome gaming experience you helped to create.
says that they hope to make a crude beta. Somehow they seem to feel that will generate interest. . . Possibly a second kickstarter round?

That said, do you not think Tyson would be farily careful about damaging his image? ie: Careful about the quality of who's involved etc?

Not really, he has always come across as the Dr. Phil of the physics department. And he can always turn around and say "we dreamed of the stars but didn't make it, but the dedication of our backers on the journey of discovery and exploration inspires everyone to keep reaching" or some other crap about how hard game development is hard (it is even harder if you don't have actual game developers involved in the project and have no idea what the game you are trying to make will actually be).

Just look at the project, no idea on what game they are going to make. They are actually trying to just sell dreams to people. The project is just about getting people to dream up stuff and suggest it to them.

@Ronald de Does thank you for supporting NDT's vision! And thank you for taking the time to write your comment. We appreciate your feedback.
The game is in the early development, conceptual stage, Our vision is for our backers to become an essential part of our development team, helping guide what this game becomes. So thank you again for your feedback. It's comments from backers like you that will help make this game awesome.
We will be releasing more details, footage and concept art with our development team as the campaign continues. Please reach out if you have any more comments or questions.

They don't have an idea of a game.

I'll give you the game description sounds very "all over the place!"

This appears to have the attributes of failure. Heavy on vision, throw in educational value, claim to be able to do in a year what none of the competing products have done in five and make a retro video (back to the 80s). Nope, not touching this.

$314,159?? [woah]

Why has the video got a very quick clearly out of context clip of a Poison Ivy cosplay saying "this is the next level of gaming"?

Like I'm 99.314159% sure she wasn't talking about "Space Odyssey".

Then going on about Star Wars, The Martian, having people talk about a "once in a lifetime opportunity" and a whole bunch of footage that looks like it isn't even in the game?

Neil deGrasse Tyson: "Maybe I want to create an actual universe"

They want $314,159?

Does look very odd doesn't it.

From the KS page :

Si4GozZ.gif

"When its red star sets and you look up into its night sky, it may seem quite familiar to our home planet."

Ok.

Does look very smoke and mirrors doesn't it.

If they have funding for the game and just need 'advisors', why the different backing levels? How do you appease those who want contradictory features? Linux backing has apparently been promised in the comments section (but nowhere else yet).

As far as I can see this hits all the alarm bells, not least the cheesy pose struck by the 'name'. I wonder if the vast amount of money still being generated by Star Citizen has had any bearing on this KS?

Hmm. Think this is one where I'll wait for the final product before spending money. Nice concept, but something about it feels set for failure or epic lame. Too much vapour, not enough 'ware.

I'm a huge Tyson fan, so it's saying something for me that I believe the information about this project is so shallow and intangible, that I can't donate..

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

I have to agree. I'm a fan of Dr. Tyson. He's really inspirational and I've loved him in the new Cosmos and whatnot.

However, this project is way too heavy on the grand vision and way too light on the details. I've watched their pitch video and read most of the (very verbose) description and I still don't know what they're trying to achieve. It seems very muddled.

You know, what this really reminds me of is the pre-release hype around "Spore." :(
