Nerf BGS effects for Solo & Private

my favourite part is where he implied that an xbox controller is a better, more precise input method than M&K or HOTAS that gives you an unfair advantage in combat

having used an xbox controller to play this game before, all I can say is "lmao what"
Also PC players have the option of using Xbone controllers, though personally I think it is ill-advised.

There are HOTAS solutions for the consoles, and if K+M is not currently usable on the consoles for control of ED then FD could always try to address that one.

The reasons for lack of cross-play are the console markets themselves - Sony and Microsoft are trying to lock players into their platform so as to try to prevent potentially switching away to a different ecosystem.

The Xbox controller is more convenient, as you can easily map all functions to it - and the Elite controller is lovely to use. The back paddles make it a little easier to control my throttle while doing other things.

But it is not precise. Even fine-tuned as mine is. I mainly stick to it because after my hiatus away and switch to PC, I didn't want to contend with learning the controls anew and starting from scratch.

When X box and pc were on the same instance way back when the controller gave players a huge advantage in interdicting they never figured out why definitively. As, far as I know the solution to this day is to just isolate each player type based on platform.
News Flash Xbox and PC were never on the same instance way back. The only thing that was talked about back then was players talking about having both platforms on the same instance and the main complaint was PC would have a better advantage because they had multiple types of controls. Frontier never had cross-platform.

The only element of cross-play between the consoles and the PC is the universe state. This is maybe what is causing some confusion.

The 3 different platforms - PC, XB1, PS4 - have separate instance management and always have.

Across the board there are essentially a total of 7 instancing situations:-
  1. Solo - same for PC, XB1, and PS4 (only the universe state is communicated)
  2. PC Group - no XB1 or PS4 players can join
  3. XB1 Group - no PC or PS4 players can join
  4. PS4 Group - no PC or XB1 players can join
  5. PC Open - platform segregation as per PC Group
  6. XB1 Open - platform segregation as per XB1 Group
  7. PS4 Open - platform segregation as per PS4 Group
You can probably also add Shadow Ban to the mix which allows affected individuals (who have falled foul of the in-game code of conduct) to play but can not affect the universe state and probably only spawn with other shadow banned players of the same platform (shadow banning may only apply for the PC platform - not sure on that one).

Player accounts are even tied to the platform they were created on, as are any associated Squadrons.

Also there is the point that each instance (of 2-7) is restricted in how many players are present (maximum of 64 IIRC) so even with Open there are bound to be same-platform Open players that you can not see nor do anything about.

The long and the short of it is that regardless of Open/PG/Solo mode and PC/XB1/PC platform segregation, there is no guarantee of spawning with any given player who may be operating counter to your own interests.
I think it funny how funny it is people who are Ra Ra Open only mode only suggestion Ignore these facts also ignore players who can not play open because they refuse or can Not Afford Paid to play for Open.

The only thing I like the xbox controller for is driving the SRV, mainly 'cause the index-finger stick on my throttle is a little fiddly for aiming the turret compared to the thumbsticks on the controller.

I have SRV throttle keyed on my pedals. Apart from steering with stick it drives like car in rally sim.

Guess it shows you cant trust all the info on the forum because that particular bit knowledge came from, you guessed it, right here.

Yes people say the wrong things all the time, that's why it's usually best to actually read a thread and the replies and looking at the context before picking out a little bit that agrees with your point of view, confirmation bias and all that. That little bit of knowledge.....well it's probably a stretch to call it knowledge, was probably corrected in the next post or two in the thread you picked it out of.

It's altogether broken that a group can hide in Solo & Private and just grind away to support their faction, with the same level of effect as people playing in Open. A 75% reduction in influence effects would probably be adequate to compensate for the reduced risk.
75% is a little harsh. I would be ok imposing that on “seasoned” players the hide in solo/pg to avoid risk. Like if you have elite rank in anything maybe a nerf. For new players something like 3-5% less would be adequate. In general I agree, I don’t like that people can essentially ghost active effects into the open galaxy but at the same time new players should be able to have an enjoyable experience. 75% should only apply to people trying to do heavy BGS/PP manipulation whilst avoiding other players, but how you would single out that CMDR vs the new CMDR in a sidewinder i don’t know. Again maybe based on rank (trade/exploration/combat) or overall experience.

.... while completely disregarding the fact that in-the-same-instance PvP is designed to be optional in the game that we all bought or backed?
The message falls on deaf ears... As always :)
Should the proponents of "me shoot" actually consider strategy rather than"got guns" and are genuinely interested in PP / BGS manipulation they may eventually realise that considerably more can be achieved by playing for the purpose rather than looking for something to shoot, just because 'every ship has guns'.

Not going to happen though as PP/BGS manipulation is not designed for instant gratification.
