Not everyone lives in a city...

Or it may just be that the UK sucks, as I know someone in London with a 6Mbps connection speed, and thats the best he can get :-(

Guys Guys Guys ;)

6 Megabyes download a second is roughly 60Megabit ok ?

2 Megabytes upload a second is roughly 20Megabit

so in daily talk I have a 60/20 line and it is rock stable.

My point was that it should be more than enough for the kind of data Elite requires.

4k Netflix or otherwise is not a problem with my connection.

By the way if you still are confused... I bet you also have a hard time with utc time (i have seen these 2 things go together nicely :) )

I teach you Mbit ans mbit and you teach me bullseye ;)

Broadband is usually measured in bits not bytes.

To convert bits to bytes you divide by 8 - so 6Mbps is less than 1 Mbyte per second.

Speed actually has nothing to do with your issues, it contention ratio and packet loss.

Contention ratio is how many other people are sharing the same broadband segment, that could be up to 50 households, so if all of those other households all stream netflix then you are getting a much smaller share of that bandwidth.

The other issue is packet loss, your first mile may be a bit noisy so at some times you could have spikes in packet loss where time sensitive apps like Elite have issues.

Netflix and the like buffer playback and recover from packet loss by retransmission of missed bits or sexy algorithms to work out flesh tones and stuff.

How do you eliminate those issues? Changing broadband supplier or changing broadband medium but sticking with same supplier may help.

Hence the original point. My connection on paper is sound :)

We have internet between us and it is not for nothing it is called a web ;)

Macedk says that the multiplayer experience of Elite Dangerous is quite poor compared to the quality of the rest of the game. It can't be his internet connection, because that's jolly well spiffing and is quite capable of streaming 4K films from Netflix. He suggests that the introduction of a client/server networking model might be more appropriate for the game and improve his gaming and multiplayer experience.

6x2? That's some pretty slow Internet.
As someone who started the game with 4 x .5 and had no issues, I can't really empathize.

Traffic Report looks decent today.

Unless it's a case of "Besides Elite, all I have running is Windows Updates, Steam downloads, NetFlix, YouTube livestream, thirteen BitTorrent streams and an FTP upload, otherwise I'm not using my network at all."

That is right Watson ;) (we all know the reason behind Sherlock is Watson)

One thing, not mine all of us ....but I have been part of online for maaany years and it is still the same thing that prevent the thing to work and yes everything is not perfect, so no illusion about that ;)

1. People, we are flawed

2. system made by humans ...flawed

3. And so on .....

The funny thing is that the real person will curse and find a way/loophole etc.

As I have said earlier reset and try a different way to make the multi player work .

Fun fact ...luggage tagged with barcode only in a major airport will have a 85% success rate, doesn't sound bad ?? But that would mean they would loose 6 million pieces of luggage a year .....so if just 15% of your base is super well that is in pr and word around the block is a killing factor. Just 15 % ouch uphill battle.

So... in my book this internet/multiplayer thing is super critical ...especially when you introduce more multiplayer critical stuff (and it sounds like that 2.4 is going to rely on it)

To be hornest ....FD have not chosen the best internet interaction (from people in the know of major internet systems)

Have the balls to make a leap of faith and change it...and by god don't lay off thy guys that followed your original plan, they did their best and will continue to do so...

As you islanders would but it ..Dav is a good sport and he is under gun but he can't make gold out of the water you gave him..

To some up ..Dear David you have the right people and they do they best to carry out what might become the greatest spacesim on many levels .... they love what they do and you can't get more than that...so you keep them loving what they do.

So with what we got make the best of it and keep reporting all that you see...they are humans like us and even if flawed try they best...

peace all and Watson thx mate you got it spot on ...it is a huge discussion about the internet and i know it is out of FD's hands ..but my personal view is that FD is pushing too hard on a place they have no control over...

Anti rant over for know...hehehehhee stay safe peeps,
