Today while minding my own business and far out of civilized space in my hauler I was doing some cartography work. The current system that I was in was 100 light years or more farther outside the last of the fringe settlements so I figured that I was pretty safe from interdictions. Right? Nope. When exploring I have the habit of setting the throttle to zero next to a star while I check out the system map and my scanner is working. All of a sudden I'm kicked out of the map and I get a "Submitted to interdiction, throttle at zero" message and I am met with an aggressive NPC Viper that is after my cargo holds (I have no cargo holds). So after a frantic dodge-n-weave in my unarmed hauler I was able to evade the Viper while only taking about 20% damage to my ship. I found myself asking the question, "How in the world did a short range Viper come out all this way in the hopes that someone will drop into one of the thousands upon thousands of unexplored systems to collect some cargo?" It was exciting and was a nice break in my otherwise exploratory grind, although it did irritate me slightly at the time. I was also happy that I didn't give up my shields as some other, more brave, explores are inclined to do.
Moral of the story: Never assume you are safe, even when you are in the middle of no-where.
