"Never fly without rebuy!" Please share your cautionary tales to help protect new CMDRs from themselves

Or share for the benefit of those who appreciate the misfortune of others...

Anyhoo, recently the misses had just enough to buy and kit out an Asp X to go into the Black. I miscalculated and noticed that I hadn't left her enough credits to cover insurance. So I gave the bad news that we would need to do a little more to get the 0.5 million or so credits needed for rebuy. Kate, who is the safest pilot and has rarely, if ever seen a rebuy screen asked, why?

Obviously I chuckled at that, whilst sadly shaking my head at her innocence.
And then remembered why I never ever EVER fly without rebuy.

This is what happened...

A long time ago, when I was just an ED pup and thought I knew everything, there was a CG thingy or a GALNET event where for a brief time, as a reward, all CMDRs were allowed access to imperial ships regardless of rank. And back then loads of people where loving imperial clippers. I also remember them being proper tough brutes so I wanted one.

For a good few days I had been frantically farming Hi REZ getting about 3 mil per hour in order to could get the Imp Clip while the special remained.

I got the cash, bought it from an empire station (stock because I didn't dare waste time saving for upgrades incase the offer expired) and limped it back to my farm spot wherever that was.

I jumped back into my max specced Vulture (pre engineers) to grind for better equipment for the clipper. The Plan was to work that Vulture to get the Clipper A spec'ed and then pwn that HIREZ.

The Vulture worked for me like a faithful hound dog! Running away when things got hairy but always tearing back at the tail pipes of 'condors when the shields recharged. Thay Vulture had stamina too and it and I knew each other so well we could farm this REZ site for hours, without coming close to the ship suffering hull damage. That Vulture was sweet!

Finally we managed to pack the Clipper with the final fitting: A rated shields was the last thing in the shopping list. Time to teach those pirates in my fav REZ zone a lesson! Switched from Vulture to Clipper. Woot Woot Woot! I click the launch button on her proper maiden voyage...

Phone rings, it was the garage letting me know how much it would cost to repair my car and MOT. Anyway we finish the convo and I returned to thr game.

Ship destroyed. What the actual F???

It had been destroyed by station police because I had been lingering. I had clicked launch but then had to answer the phone, with the ship in the undocking sequence. Nooooo!

I couldn't pay off the insurance for the ship because I had spent it all on the shields. Noooooooooooo! I hadn't even got to fly her properly. :'o(

I remember sitting there, staring at the screen for a full minute. Crushed. I had no idea how long that offer in Imperial space will last. Would I have time to grind enough again? Etc etc.

So I looked at the Vulture. Thought of the Glorious Clipper that I was so close to having and now REALLY had to own. Again, looked back at my trusty, reliable Vulture.

Looking back, I wonder if it was aware of me calculating the value of her equipment. Or whether it felt any form of betrayal as I swapped out its military grade hull for the light alloys and gutted its combat equipment for fuel tanks and jump range as I traded her in. I like to think it was wagging its faithful tail to the end.

I got the Clipper and eventually upgraded it as before but she flew like a sick lazy pig in HIREZ. I missed that Vulture.

Moral of that story: ALWAYS retain the insurance, because bad things are bound to happen some time or other.

Does anyone else have a cautionary tales that may cause new CMDRs to do something daft?

I usually run unknowns out of a Haz Res if they refuse to wing up. I've found myself getting a Torp up the backside just before the rest of their team turns up on a couple of occasions.

I've flown enough times drunk or tired to know that you should always double check you have asked for landing permission before boosting into the slot.

You should, in any case, learn about the importance of momentum when boosting through the slot and have "reverse thrusters" on a button that doesn't stick on your HOTAS.

Whilst not strictly "fly without rebuy", my tale is about paying attention to the rebuy screen nevertheless.

I realised pretty quickly that flying without a rebuy would be a problem, so I have always had the necessary amount. What I did not realise, in the beginning, is that the rebuy screen offers (offered?) the possibility to select which modules one wants to rebuy, and the first time I lost a (mildly) engineered ship (i.e. G2-3 FSD) I clicked randomly on the module selection, not paying attention to the fact that I was basically removing them from my rebuy.

In the end I got my ship back, but without its upgrades, and lost my first ever engineered module. 😅

Now, if I get a rebuy, I double and triple check that I am rebuying EVERYTHING!

On the PS4 default lower landing gear is hold O and hit down on the d pad. Boost is hit O.
I've found myself boosting past my pad into the back of the starport often enough to make me lower year before entering the slot earlier in the game.

On my first visit to an Odyssey settlement I was trying to figure out how to recharge my suit but drew a pistol by mistake. Got a warning and put it away but still needed to recharge. Hitting buttons randomly and out came the pistol again.
Next thing I'm in a detention centre 99ly from where I was and Apex took most of what I had!
On the bright side only another ly to get an engineer invite...

Hmm, there's so many.

How about doing some trading out around the Pleiades and deciding to check out a NHSS threat 6 for giggles. A fully laden Cutter doesn't outrun a Thargoid interceptor and you can have the best shields in the world, but a shutdown field will sort those out quick enough.

Yep, that's a classic.
I did the same with my brand new and super-shiney Vulture.
I got out okay but hit boost instead of landing gear on the way back in and smashed into the back wall.
And back to the Viper Mk III for a while... end of 2015 or thereabouts.
