I picked up a bunch of missions, some courier and a pirate massacre mission. Decided to do the pirate massacre first. Get a message to say that bad guys are after me for one of the courier missions. Jump to target system and head for pirate signal source. Get comms to say one of the bad guys has me on his radar, but signal source is close by and get there before he interdicts me. Kill the first pirate and he drops in and starts shooting. I shoot back and notice there are limpets round his ship! Turns out the pirates have scanned him, realise he is carrying cargo and are robbing him with hatch breakers! This hacks him off and he starts shooting at them too and they shoot back! Needless to say between us we dispatch him pretty quickly. I guess it was one of those days he would have been better off staying in bed!

Yeah, you can get some fun NPC interactions. I always like it when two assassination targets drop in and one helps me finish the other - before then realising I was the real enemy 
And super useful. For example in HazRES or at the compromised NAV beacon, being there alone would be a pain if everybody focused just you.
As it is, you can join in on their fisticuffs and help them help you.
Had a funny one once mining... I was after some void opals and a wing 3 small pirate ships were asking for my cargo, I dropped like 8t they picked it up and a second wing of pirates arrive at the scene and scan the ones that just had my cargo... they all start fighting each other and a half-dead eagle was the sole survivor. Killed it and "Bob is your uncle".
