I read somewhere, during Beta, that the "hammers" at the end were centrifuges for refining stuff. Can't remember if that was from the devs or someone's guess. Seems plausible though.
Wait until you approach the side of the station in shadows. The stealth propellers were instant death back when collisions did more damage, not sure about now, but they do move at quite a speed.
